The build on my 24mm clone is a bit more complicated than you describe your 22mm. That is because the two slots in the chamber that are supposed to lock the deck from rotating don't lock well enough unless I remove the 510 altogether and take the build deck from the end cap. Then place the deck in and make certain it is locked in place before re-inserting the end cap and the 510 pin. That many just be a quirk of this clone I can't say.
Since using the cotton ball method I described above I have not had any leaking even after several refills. No dry hits and only the slightest spitback right after some of the refills. The spitback when it happens only after refill goes away quickly. I have used your method of turning upside down to create a vacuum with my uwell Crown tanks and it is very effective. Since using the cotton method I described I have not had the need to do that to this dotmod clone. I have zero leaking once I figured out how to wick this thing.
If you are adventurous you can try removing the trap in your sink (the round section of pipe under the sink). It is very possible you will find the missing part in there. Also cleaning a plated part is not really necessary. The plating process takes care of that.
