Hello everyone, John here. I was just trying to get any useful advice on vaping. I have been vaping now for a fairly long time, using the Ego type e cigs for most of the time, but eventually graduated to a Vamo V5. Started with a Kanger protank mini, but did not like the tiny amount of smoke they created, so I moved up to an Aspire Nautilus. This was fine at first, but I found that the coils for them were difficult to find on eBay, without buying from a foreign source, and without waiting for long periods of time. This annoyed me, so I got a Cerotank next, since they claim to allow 3 different types of coils, but found it to be the worst tank yet, as only the original Kanger coils worked well, the shorter BVC coils were strange, in that they required the tank to be very loose, if I tightened it tightly, it would give me a low load message. To make it work, I have to remove the tank, and pull out the connector, often, and eventually, I just gave up. I resorted to buying a final set of coils for my nautilus, and ordered a mechanical mod.

So, I now have a mechanical mod on the way, I purchased a RBA or RDA, the rebuild able Atomizer, I got some ekowool wick, some good kanthal twisted wire, an Ohm reader resistance tester. I got an affordable clone type mod, an FUhatton carbon fiber mod, since they claim to have good venting for battery gases, as well as a Little Boy carbon fiber V2 atomizer.

I've read up on making my own coils, and watched a few video's, which show how to make the coils, and how to test them with the meter, but am not sure why the people use the wicks, placing them in, and dry light the coils. Does that do something for the coils? Is it necessary to do this to get the wick ready for the e juice? I've also seen that some people like to make their wicks with additional threads, to hold more e-liquid, where others seem to make short wicks, then pack loose wick so that it is packed all around the coils and the attached wicks. Is there anything I need to know about this? I'm only assuming that the padded style is to avoid having to drip juice in often.

My batteries, I have +BRC 18650 6000maH 3.7 volt batteries, but they seem to drain very fast. I kept them on my window ledge, and since I love the cold, I leave mu windows open all the time, no matter how cold, even sub 40 degree Fahrenheit weather, so I am wondering if this has damaged them, should I buy new batteries, and what is a good set or brand? I want to be sure my batteries don't damage anything, or fail badly in the mechanical mod.

While using the 24mg strength liquid, I hit the e cig every few minutes a few times, but this past few months, I got some really weak 6mg or 3mb bottle hand me downs from a nephew that made me hit it very frequently, so I don't know if this is what damaged my batteries.

Due to the high cost of liquids, my local vape shop sells the 10ml bottles for 10 dollars or more, and rarely has sales of 5 dollars per bottle, with 30ml bottles costing around 20 dollars. 130ml bottles are around 75, so I decided to give up on those as well, and read up on making my own liquids. I found out that vegetable glycerin was best for smoke, while propylene glycol was best for flavor, so I got some high quality 60/40 blend. I read up on the dangers of the liquid nicotine, especially anything higher than 75mg/ml, and using gloves, goggles, and a face mask, as well as hand washing for safety. I also purchased some flavor liquid for the mix, and am still waiting on the 30ml bottles I ordered with the metal needle like end for easy dripping.

But out of an abundance of caution, I would prefer not to trust online video's on YouTube as my sole source of liquid mixing directions, so I would love it if anyone were willing to give me advice on a good ratio of liquids for 10ml and 30 ml bottles. 30 is fine, as I can just divide that by 3, my reason for wanting the 10ml ratio is because I have a few bottles of that size with 0 nicotine, so am wanting to mix in my 75mg/ml to equal 24mg strength.

A helpful video taught me to use separate measuring syringes for making my e liquids, and to never use the nicotine syringe for anything else. I have the rubber gloves, and a few of the hospital style face masks for fumes, so I just want to be safe on ratio's. The online video I watched recommended this recipe. Start with vg pg to avoid tipping bottle with liquid nicotine first. They recommend using 9ml of pg. 13.33ml of pg. 6ml of e-juice if using the type that requires the liquid to steep or set for around one week. Lastly they recommend 1.67ml of the 75mg/ml. Unfortunately, he didn't explain the strength this would make the liquid. I have no idea if this makes a 3-6mg strength, or if it makes a higher strength liquid.

As I have mentioned, I want to be safe, as it is a poisonous liquid. I understand the requirements of ensuring safety with the gloves and eyewear and facemask, but without knowing the strength of the liquid mix with the recipe he gave, I figure it would be just as unsafe as if I were foolish enough to buy 100mg/ml or stronger nicotine.

I also wanted to know, he recommended mixing the liquid with a high speed drill equipped with a bladed cut q tip, to ensure the mix is well blended and air is properly mixed in to do something for the mix. I purchased the empty 50ml bottles with the metal drip tip so that I could shake mix them, is this ok? Would they get enough mixing by shaking the liquid in the larger bottle, when I make 30ml recipe? Is it still better to blend with a plastic frayed q tip to make a safe mixing tool?

Most important, am I missing anything? As I mentioned, I'm a 39 year old man, who wants to be as safe as possible, I want to avoid shortcuts, but I also want to avoid the expensive coils that last no time at all, and definitely am wanting to no longer have to buy store made e liquids which are also super expensive. I got the nicotine from a reputable source online, all other fluids are guaranteed safe for e juice use, kosher and everything. Only the empty bottles with the metal tips are from China, everything else is made in America, again, for quality and safety. I have a storage type safe, where I will store my nicotine, to avoid anyone getting into it, but have no kids at home, just myself and my elderly parents and my pet dog. Have I covered my bases well enough, or are there other sources of info I can use?

And Thank you to everyone here for any and all advice and help:) Happy vaping everyone:)

Hello and welcome to the forum Gamewiz1. Glad to have you here!:)

The batteries you have are totally unsuitable for vaping. You need IMR or IMR/hybrid "safe-chemistry", "high-drain" batteries. The mah of the battery is not as important as the CDR (continuous discharge rating) of the battery. How high a CDR, I'll quote tj99959:

Everyone is free to set their own parameters, and I can only say what mine are.

I try to never exceed 50% of the CDR of a battery. So with your 20a batteries, that would be 10a.
This Ohm's Law Calculator tells me that a .4 ohm build is as low as I would want to use.

The reason that I place a 50% limit is because as a battery ages the mAh of the battery degrades, as the mAh degrades ... so does the batteries c rating. (amp limit) So down the road, your 20a battery may only be a 10a battery.

=========

Since you are new to mech mods and rebuildables I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditudes Blogs. The blogs that address battery safety, Ohm's Law, CDR (continuous discharge rating/Amps) and how they all work together are detailed below:

BATTERIES

Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

Purple Efest Batteries not as Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

MECHANICAL MODS & REBUILDABLES

Information Resources for Your First RBA
* An essential read and reference guide for someone new to rebuilding coils. Includes a multitude of useful links on battery safety, mod safety, coil meters, coil building, and the differences in the three types of RBA's.

Inexpensive Mechanical Mod/RDA Setup

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

Regarding juice (and DIY) from an ingredient safety standpoint:

If you're concerned about diketones (diacetyl, Acetoin, and/or Acetyl Propionyl), you can try to avoid any "buttery, custard, creamy, rich, bakery" type flavors, and stay with tobaccos/fruits.

You can also deal with vendors who specifically list on their website whether diketones (diacetyl/acetyl propionyl) are used/possibly present.

1. Ahlusion
2. Mountain Oak Vapors has links to their lab reports in each juice description.
3. The Vapor Bar has the lab reports on their blog.
4. JuiceMafia has links to lab reports in some of their juice descriptions, and their report seems to cover a ton of their juices.
5. NicoTicket also openly discloses which of their flavors contain diketones, which I appreciate because it allows us to make informed decisions about what to vape.

You could DIY and only use ingredients/vendors who verify ingredients or you could try vaping unflavored. Many members here choose to vape with no flavoring and enjoy it.

What are Diacetyl, Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin?

hmm, honestly I don't know the brand name on them, as I just found a 4 pack on ebay, which came with a quad charger that plugged into the wall. Since they had a high maH rating, I thought that they would be great, and would last longer than what I was used to on the Ego type of e cigs, but they started strong, but eventually they seem to only last a few hours. Now, to be fair, like I mentioned, I don't know if I damaged them by having them on the window sill. Since I leave the windows open during the winter, I didn't know if I may have damaged or ruined them from the cold. They just don't list any brand, so I don't know if they are just a bad brand either. What is the best brand for them? I will definitely buy some better ones, because I go through four of these daily right now, but I do use my Vamo constantly, due to using the very weak 3mg liquid at the moment. I am just not ready to mix my own, until I get more info, to be sure I'm ok.hehe

Ah , yes, I already avoid those flavors, I find that the buttery custard creamy type flavors are horrible, I just don't like them. To date, my favorites are definitely fruit flavors. I should have mentioned, I got into vaping, because I quit smoking years ago, and only got into it because I enjoyed the "Act" of smoking, something I just enjoyed to do with friends, so since it was a healthier than smoking alternative to full on smoking, I got into this, and loved the juice flavors. It was just what I wanted.

After you have wrapped your coil and secured it to your atomiser then checked it on your ohm meter then put it on your mod and give to a fire to see how it glows. You want it glowing evenly from the inside to the outside. Some people at this point will glow the coil let go of the fire button Unless you have some ceramic tweezers and gently squeeze the coil to make a contact coil. Myself I don't do it I just go for the coils glowing evenly inside to outside.
Giving the coils a gently scrape along the length of them with the end of a screw driver can help even the glowing at times though i don't know why.

Wicking depends on the atomiser my tanks Lemo and Goblin take different wicking techniques , well they are different platforms but one likes the wick ends a little in the juice channels the other likes them away from the juice channels. Best to read around here or look at a few videos of people wicking the device/s you have.
Ive found for the most part drippers to be rather forgiving in wicking.
I use Samsung 25R batteries as many others do , Sonys are also favs of many.
This site can help a lot = Coil wrapping | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators
Unless the batteries were old or just not that good then using them more shouldn't do anything but make them drain quicker.

Head on over to the DIY thread
DIY E-Liquid
You'll find all you want to know - (eventually lots of info)
I get the 100mg nicotine then I mix 24ml of the 100mg nicotine with 76 ml of VG. So i get 24mg solution.
If you want say a 6mg solution then thats 1/4 of 24 So if you want to make 50ml of juice at 6mg I would use 50 / 4 = 12.5ml so 12.5ml of my 24mg base solution.
Of course you could just put 6ml of the 100mg nic and add in 94ml of Vg to get the 6ml. I just started making a 24mg solution so i could go 24 or 12 or 6 or 3, originally I would get 24mg juice from the stores.

Some juices are good to make and vape others get better after steeping. Some steep just by waiting some put the juice into warm water , some use a sonic ultra cleaner. You'll get to know this in the threads.

Ive been using nic from my freedom smokes and flavourings from the flavours apprentice and capella and few others. VG I get locally

Thank you Wolfenstark, that is great info as well. I was looking at some batteries, ATW brand, with a continuous discharge current of 35amps. They seem to be a good mix of high mah, with a good continuous discharge current. I will look for some of the Samsung or Sony brands, especially Sony models, as they are usually good stuff, so again thank you, I will finish reading your info as soon as my movie ends, :)

There is no 18650 battery with a CDR over 30A. AW doesn't mislabel their batteries with the "pulse rate" (not that I have ever seen). You may be looking at counterfeit AW batteries.

How many mah was that AW battery you were looking at? Where did you see it?

The reason I was looking for a high amp battery was because I purchased 24G + 26G Twisted - 4ft Kanthal wire, so I figured I would need to make sure I had a battery that could light this double twist wire, which was pretty thick, so while I haven't managed to read everything yet, I was thinking that a double wire twist would need higher power batteries. I am doing my best to read up though on everything, just having to go between reading, and helping my mom at the moment:)

Ok, to be safe, I used the battery guide and got the 18650VTC5 2600mAh 30A batteries. I use Sony items all the times, so I figured that they would be the best I could get. Thanks for such great info, I haven't been able to even read half yet, its amazing how easy it is to get such great help here, Thank you all for taking the time to help me, I do so appreciate it everyone:)

Ok, just to mention this also, here are the items that I already have, they have already been delivered so I can't change them, so I figured I would run them by everyone, to be sure that things are ok, and to see if there are better/higher recommended brands of these items.

1. My nicotine is from NicVape.com, and as I had mentioned, I got 75mg/ml
2. SVAvapor Flavor Concentrate in Propylene glycol for flavor, and to maximize the amount of liquid I could make
3. My pg vg mix is 60/40 of Food Grade, Kosher, Premium quality, with a picture of a tree in a non descript white label clear bottle

But just curious on the battery charger. I use a four battery at once Li ion battery charger, which plugs into the wall with a cord. Do I need to upgrade to a better name brand, or is this normal generic type charger fine, since it is still for Lithium Ion batteries, as long as I stay in the area while charging? Mine does not have a function where it drains the battery and then charges them, is this ok? It is only a charger with red light for dead battery with green for fully charged.
