Hello from Michigan! KangerTech EVOD leaking help?

Hey folks!

I started my e-cig journey yesterday. Went to a well established e-cig store in my area and got all set up with a KangerTech EVOD. I love it. I woke up this morning and my coughs are so much better than they were when I'd smoke almost 2 packs a day. However, I'm TOTALLY bummed. Last night before bed, I noticed that when I'd inhale it'd make a weird "gurgling" sound and the liquid would slowly start to drip out of the tip where I'd inhale. I looked at the liquid level and it was low, so I decided I'd try to put liquid back in it before bed. BUT - when I took the liquid part off (sorry, total noob, don't know the lingo yet) the liquid just totally started dripping out of the tip where I'd inhale all over the place.

I'm able to go and get a replacement, but I want to know if this is "normal" before driving over there.

Its not normal, but its not uncommon either. There are a couple of things that could be happening. 1st it could just be condensation of the vapor building up. Remove the drip tip. (thats the part you inhale from). It should just pull out of the top of your evod tank. Roll up a piece of paper towel and gently wipe out the top where the drip tip is inserted.

Most likely you may have experienced flooding of the coil. Best way to check is to unscrew the EVOD tank from the battery and check inside the top of the battery and see if there is liquid there. Do the same thing you did with the top of the tank and use a paper towel or q-tip and clean out the top of the battery. You should also probably wipe out the threads on the tank itself also.

Now to the causes of why this happens. There are many, but it helps to understand how your EVOD operates. If you unscrew the bottom of your tank (like you're going to fill it) you will notice the coil that is screwed into the base. If you look at the coil you will notice a wick at the bottom on each side of the coil. The way things work is that your liquid is absorbed into the wick and carried to the heating element of the coil. The heating element heats up your juice which is then vaporized. If at any point in the operation raw liquid manages to get inside the coil via anything other than the wick, then you get flooding.

There are a few things you can check. Make sure that your coil is screwed firmly into the base. Hand tight but firm is fine. Dont over tighten it. Just make sure its not loose. Make sure the silicone grommet is pushed all the way down on the shaft. And finally, make sure that the wick itself is intact and that there are no gaps around where it enters into the coil as the wick itself acts a a gasket.

It could be just a defective coil, or sometimes something might get displaced in the act of filling or refilling. Try replacing the coil if you have an extra.

Generally, if you hear gurgling, its time for a quick check to clean up any loose liquid, and then a troubleshoot to try and determine how that the juice i getting out. It's not something that will work itself out on its own.

Best of luck and congrats on quitting! Keep at it and dont let these minor setbacks deter you.

First most - Welcome to ECF and congrats!

Ok, out of curiousity - what type/flavor juice are you using? Some do not react well with plastic - this can cause the leaking you are experiencing with an evod. You cannot remove your mouthpiece as stated above- on an evod it is one solid piece - unscrew your evod from your battery and stick paper towel in the mouth piece and blow a good puff of air through the base to clear out any liquid in the airway.

Another thing that may help, you will notice if you remove the base, as if you are going to fill the evod there is a little rubber grommet on the metal chimney slide it a few mm towards the top of the chimney so that when you put it back together the plastic tube inside the evod seats that grommet in where it should be to make a better seal.

Lastly - when you put it back together- be sure not to over tighten. Screw in the base *just* finger tight and do not really wrench down on it, same when you attach the evod back to your battery - attach until it is *just* secure. This is a super common mistake that causes many problems for new vapors :)

Hope this helps some!

I'm using a flavor called "XXX Menthol". Not sure if it's just a weird brand name for it, but it's a menthol taste.

Thank you SO much for all of this information from all of you. This is great. Glad I found this community. I'm gonna do these steps and try filling it again before driving out. Had to go out and get regular cigs this morning and I already feel the crap in my lungs.

Just thought I'd post an update if anyone ever searches and finds this thread. I went back to the store I got it from, they changed the coil, all is well. Works perfectly, no leaks.
Great! I know when I first started gurgling and flooding were problems I had. I bought two Kanger MT3S' and still had the problem, just not as bad. It wasn't until I started rebuilding my old coils did I completely eliminate the problem. After trying different wick and coil builds, I finally ended up using one 3mm silica wick and one 2mm silica wick. I needed 5mm to stop my leaking/flooding problem. Now everything's perfect and and even my dog likes me again.

The Evod, or any bottom coil clearomizer, can leak out of the mouthpiece while filling. Once you unscrew it and release the vacuum, any stray juice or built up condensation, will then leak out of the mouthpiece. I routinely get a few drips when I fill me Evods so I roll up some paper towel and stick it thru the mouthpiece. As long as it doesn't keep pouring out, this is all very normal for me.

As for the gurgling and getting liquid when you are vaping. Gurgling or flooding is normally cured by blowing out the excess liquid...just take it off the battery and blow it out into a towel. I guess if you get too much liquid into the coil area or air tube, you could draw that all the way up...especially if you draw really hard. Try longer, less powerful draws.
