Hello, I'm Chris from Phoenixville, PA and I am a vaping newbie

Hello all, I hope everyone is doing well. As the title states, my name is Chris, I am 34 years old and currently reside in Phoenixville, PA, and I started vaping about 2 months ago. I actually got into this as a non-smoker so I'm well aware I'm in the minority there. I've gotten into this for several reasons. As someone who has Asperger's syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, and anxiety disorder I am highly prone to nervous ticks which include impulsive behaviors and coping mechanisms. While I am on Effexor and Klonopin to help control the depression and anxiety to an extent, they have the side effect of draining my ambition and drive, resulting in me living a pretty lifeless existence.

I live with two roommates who are into some "all natural herb smoking" to put it euphemistically and as such, spend quite a bit of time at the local smoke shop after work. As I do not drive and we all work at the same place, I would usually be there as well. I didn't mind much as the people that ran the place were quite nice and it had a really chill atmosphere. One day while down there, my roommates bought these cheap $10 disposable analogues and it piqued my curiosity as neither of them were into cigarettes.

At first, I didn't want anything to do with it as I watched, at a very young age, my maternal grandmother die an extremely painful death due to lung cancer and my paternal grandfather suffer a very prolonged battle with emphysema so I never had the urge to try cigarettes (however, I always did enjoy the smell of the tobacco whenever dad smoked on his pipe). After researching e-cigs online and looking into the contents of the juice, I did buy one of the zero nicotine analogues myself. I liked how when I took drags on it, it felt easier to chill out and relax and I didn't feel the need to eat something or start gnawing on a random piece of plastic or soft rubber like I usually tended to do.

I eventually went online and bought a Kanger Protank 2 starter kit with 2 1000 mAh fixed voltage batteries. After doing more research online, talking with the people at the smoke shop, and watching various YouTube personalities (primarily IndoorSmokers), I gradually upgraded my setup to what I currently use, which is an Aspire Nautilus Mini on a Vision Spinner 1500 mAh variable voltage mod. I know that it's far from the best experience one can get with that setup, but I'm always willing and trying to learn new things related to improving the experience (aka I'm a gadget nerd, which comes from my background as a computer geek having my undergrad in Information Systems).

Currently I'm trying to learn new techniques as it pertains to steeping e-liquid as I bought a bunch of zero nicotine 50/50 e-juice from mount baker Vapor and after letting them sit in my nightstand drawer for a couple of weeks, I started trying them out. Three of them (freckled lemonade, sour yum, and peach rings) really did not do anything for me and resulted in me dumping out the tank and repeatedly rinsing it out. One of them (green ice) I like the cool, tingly feeling of the menthol, and the final one (thug juice) I feel has potential but the flavor is barely noticeable. I still have 6 left to try, but before I do, I'm working on attempting to do the breathing and shaking techniques for them as suggested online and am also considering the warm water bath as well.

I am really thankful for this new hobby as it has helped me not be as nervous, controlled my food cravings, and refreshed my day to day living. As stated before, I am very well aware that I am a novice at this and the more I read, the more questions than answers result, as is the case with any new interest in the beginning, but I am very willing to learn what this community has to teach someone like me and I look forward to being accepted as a part of it. Thank you all in advance for your time, kindness, understanding, and guidance.

Warm regards,

Chris

Welcome, Chris! I also started as a non-smoker. Well, I smoked for about 12 years, but that was 10 years ago. Then recently, going through a stressful time, I wanted to smoke again, but tried an ecig instead. The rest, as they say, is history. That's a good starter set-up you have there. I have no suggestions for your e-juice, as I haven't yet tried Mount Baker. But you're on the right track! And as one who also suffers from depression and anxiety, I agree that this hobby definitely eases things a bit.

Once again, welcome! :) Ask away, the people on this forum are always ready to help!

Congratulations Chris, Stay with the zero nic. I do find that vaping is relaxing, I think this stems from the fact that we are breathing differently when we vape. Also, the smoke is pretty to blow out and try to make smoke rings. Please don't throw out your unliked juice, though. There is a pay-it-forward thread here, where, someone could use what you don't like to help them in their vaping voyage.
I make my own juice, but, I am not very experimental and make a 250ml batch at a time. I found that shaking or stirring helps the flavors meld. So, you are on the right track. As you can imagine by the time I get to the end of the batch it is very well steeped after about 40 days. I like the start of the batch as much as the last of it. If you like the cigar smell, have you tried any tobacco flavors? In the spirit of the pay-it-forward principal, I have some "tobacco absolute" that I could make up for you at zero nic 50/50 pg/vg, if you would like to try it. It would be a few days to a week before I could mail it as the boat I work on is going to be travelling for the next ten days. And I would have to find a place somewhere to mail it. There would be no charge at all, as priority in a small box is pretty cheap. There are some threads here about the tobacco absolute. I actually use it as the base in my juice. I make a chocolate/hazelnut/tobacco/raspberry blend (with something by Myfreedomsmokes.com called MTS vape wizard) that satisfies all my needs. The only other flavor that I liked at all is Halo Torque.(One bottle of 30ml costs me as much as my 250ml batch, so it is a treat, when I feel like splurging.) I am pretty picky just as you seem to be.

Helo mountaingal, and thanks for the offer, I've been a little nervous about trying tobacco flavor because my first instinct when I think of tobacco is to think of smelly cigarettes, but I am aware of how irrational that sounds and have been quite curious about the taste of tobacco flavors as I do like the smell of pipe tobacco, especially the flavored tobacco. Thank you for the generous offer of giving me some free juice to try out, I am definitely interested. I tried to PM you, but as I am still under 5 posts, I am not able to yet, so I think you would need to message me first. Thank you again :D.

kefka40, you are right, We'll have to wait until you get more posts. The thing with the tobacco flavors is they do not taste like smelly tobacco. I think they taste like a freshly opened pack of cigs. Sweet and aromatic. I'll mix up some for you. And it can steep until you can PM me. I'll make a two batches, one with just tobacco and one with some chocolate in it. We travel today, and Saturday, so I should have some time to get them done. :)

If you ever get into cherry hill nj, there is a shop called greatest vapes off of route 70 that has a vape bar to sample flavors... the guys there are top notch and might be able to help you find flavors you love! All their juices are premium and the mix in house and have other brands as well, def worth the trip!

Welcome! It sounds like you are off to a great start!
If you are wanting to try a new tank the Aspire Nautilus with the BVC coils seems to be a great buy for most and it puts out better flavor and vapor.

Low/no nic juice seems to have a bit more of a muted flavor. when you find some flavors you like from MBV try adding some flavor shots to boost it a bit.

Talk to your doctor about the use of nicotine. It is a stimulant and may help with some of your disorders. Not all doctors agree with this, as it is self medicating a bit, and when you say "nicotine" most think of cigarettes. I am not a doctor, but I have noticed that a lot of smokers seem to have depression issues, and it seems smoking helps with that a bit. Again, I'm not an expert and have not done a ton of research other than that general observation. So talk to your doctor, and maybe another for a second opinion if you feel its necessary.

Hello and welcome, Chris. :)

You probably already know about steeping, but this video was fun to watch and explained a few things in detail that I'd seen others mention before.

Regarding the warm water bath, I did this with my last Mt. Baker order, and it seemed to help speed the process. I started noticing a slight color change (a good thing) faster than I had with the last order. When my last order arrived, I put all my bottles into a plastic ziplock bag, filled one of those small plastic storage containers with hot water from the tap, put the bag into it, and put the lid onto it. I let it sit for a couple of hours. Then I replaced the water inside with fresh hot water and let it sit a few more hours. I also shook the bottles every other day. I should have done it every day or even twice a day (according to what I'd read), but I was a bit forgetful. I let the bottles sit in a closet, out of direct light, for two weeks before vaping the juice.

Also, there's some info online about using sonic cleaners (for jewelry) to speed up steep times. They are a combo of a warm water bath and shaking/vibrating that produces microscopic bubbles in the e-juice. The bubbles mix it rapidly, and people claim that it cuts steep times significantly. It's an expensive route to take, however, because the sonic cleaners can be $80-100. Personally, I plan to always have enough steeped juice on hand to last two weeks. That way, I can place an order, receive it, and let it steep while I vape what I already have. That seems more reasonable than spending $80 on a machine.

Regarding the flavor not being noticeable, did you order extra flavor shots? My first MBV order contained no extra shots. It was okay, but it needed more flavor. This last order contained three extra shots. I think I'm going with two extra shots next time for some of the flavors where three is just too strong for me. I recommend that you order one extra shot (maybe two) next time.

If you like minty flavors, I suggest Wintergreen. I wish I'd ordered more bottles, because I've already run out of that flavor. Candy Cane is also great if you like a cold feeling when you inhale. Spearmint is also good. I haven't tried the menthol flavors or Extreme Ice yet, but they will be in my next order.

Good luck and have fun!

Hi Chris! Welcome to ECF. I just wanted to send you a heads up that there's actually a vape shop/lounge in Phoenixville. I haven't been to Liberty Vapor, but a lot of folks who don't like the sense of humor of the staff at my local shop head to that one and have raved about it. It's on Bridge Street (322). Best wishes in your vaping journey from a fellow SEPA vaper.

Yeah dmetzcher, I was actually reading about nicotine being a potential appetite suppressant and anti-depressant (in fact, many MAO inhibitors, the chemical family nicotine belongs to, are commonly prescribed as anti-depressants). I did try to bring up the subject of using an ecig for such things, but she nipped the conversation in the bud (II have a feeling she doesn't take what I say too seriously and am considering a different primary care physician) and just suggested I see a nutritionist, which I have done before and it basically boiled down to the appointments giving the same advice each time, nothing against the nutritionist, she's a nice enough person, but sometimes advice dispensed is easier said than followed.

Also, I find it pretty weird that taking the nicotine out of the juice would adversely affect the flavor output, as I figured that with one less chemical in the mix, making it just flavor and the base, that the flavor would become more pronounced, and the MBV online support also told me that I would most likely not need flavor shots as I excluded the nic, but then again, science was never a strong subject of mine (I don't believe I ever got above a C in any of my undergrad science classes), so I could be totally off base (pardon the pun) with that assumption. Also, while we're on the subject of juice, is there a way to find a sweet spot as it pertains to the PG/VG combination? Currently I've been doing 50/50 mix through MBV and whatever mix the juices the local smoke shop carries (Uncle Junk's, AR Liquid, and Heavenly/Sinful Juice). It seems risky experimenting with combinations as it seems like a quick and easy way to burn through money. I do like tovape for the flavor, though I will also admit that I do get a little bit of fun out of seeing the cloud I can produce, sort of reminds me of blowing bubbles or chewing bubble gum as a kid and trying to get as big of a bubble as possible (though not enough to breach the topics of mech mods and rebuilding as my building/repairing expertise is limited to PCs for the most part). Also, I am strongly considering going with Zamplebox to try out different flavors and types. I'm debating whether or not to say yes or no to tobacco as I'm not familiar with the taste, having never smoked a real cigar, pipe, cigarette, etc. before (as I stated in my introductory post, I do like the smell of pipe tobacco, just not sure if it would carry over to taste). Thanks as always for listening and any and all advice is highly appreciated as always.

Nicotine effects the flavor. I am not sure about the science behind it, but in my mind it's like salted caramel. Something about the salt helps other flavors show through, without just tasting salty.

Zamplebox could be a good way to sample flavors. Personally I like sampling at vape shops, but not everyone has a bunch of those, so you do what you can. If you don't know if you like tobacco or not, check the box and try it. If you don't like it un check the box for next time! Craftvapory is the subscription service I want to try :) but I'd nail down the flavors I like before putting up the cash for that.
