Obvious new guy here and to vaping. I got a recommendation for a friend to look into the smok Alien 220w kit, but through research (here and around the web) it apparent there are some QC problems with Smok and my second choice Wismech. What are some recommendations for good quality box mods? I am looking for a sub-ohm high wattage mod kit with a price point around $100 for everything (box, tank). Battery and charger advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some information to help;
Mainly a DTL smoker, not a cloud chaser per say, but not opposed to it as long as its reasonable (not some ....... that blows massive clouds in public).
Thanks in advance,

The smok isn't THAT bad. It's the tanks that suck not the mods. I actually just bought a new wismec 2/3 and I've got two presas. Everything has held up well so far except for one pressa that needed to have its battery door magnets super glued back in which took maybe 5 minutes.

I like wismec because they use aluminum rather than zinc to make their devices.

The best starter mod I know of at the moment is the eleaf pico. It's small, cheap, reliable, and reasonably accurate.

I've heard good things about Vapresso. You may want to check out the aspire speeder kit. I know there are a few folks on here that have had good experiences with that. I don't own that tank but I like aspire products generally. There are plenty of other good powerful tanks and devices out there, I am sure you'll get more recommendations.

Sorry, but most Wismec mods are zinc alloy. The vast majority of mods by all manufacturers are. You won't find an aluminium mod at the Wismec price point. Also, Smok mods do have some serious issues. The Alien and Al85 definitely do (with the exception of subpar tc my Alien was ok though). Smok tanks seem to be fairly good, but cater pretty much exclusively to high wattage, dtl vapers.

i go by the labeling on fasttech. While I cannot speak to the entire wismec line, The mods I have are the rx 200 2/3, and the presa. both are listed as being made of aluminum. I can confirm the presa is aluminum because I ground the rest of the paint off after the wear got too severe. as for the rx200 2/3 it is altogether too light in the hand for zinc to be likely.

Yeah, don't trust the Fasttech labelling. They're wrong more often than they're right. This is some information I found about the rx2/3:

Wismec Reuleaux RX2/3 MOD is made with the finest available materials. The body and frame is fabricated with high-grade aluminum-zinc metal alloy. A unique blend of aluminum, zinc, magnesium, and copper...
Wismec Reuleaux RX2/3 mod by JayBo Designs - Vapor Authority

So while there's aluminium in the mix (if that text is to be trusted), it is a die cast zinc alloy. That's probably the case with the Presa as well. When talking about aluminium mods what is usually meant is a pure aluminium milled frame, not a frame that's been die cast out of an alloy. No Wismec mod is of milled aluminium, and this "aluminium-zinc alloy" is probably pretty close to what other manufacturers use.

I reiterate: I know aluminum when I grind it. zinc ally is generally 90% zinc or higher, it is very very heavy, and it corrodes very quickly. Aluminum is a light metal that does not visibly corrode after the first layer of oxidation. the mod in question has been bare metal for months and has not corroded at all. It is light enough that the mod is barely heavier than the atty, ironically making it a bit top heavy. I have less info about the rx200, but it is also light.

your link gives me a blank page.

The Presa could be aluminium, I don't know, and I don't care. I've had mods of stainless steel, copper, brass, aluminium, and to me the zinc alloy that is predominant in regulated mods is perfectly fine. The added cost of pure aluminium is simply not worth it to me. If the Presa were aluminium you'd think that Wismec would advertise it though, as it would be a selling point. The material isn't mentioned on their website. Was the mod painted? In that case it's unlikely to have been pure aluminium as that's usually anodised. The rx200 is most definitely not aluminium (I have several of them).

Zinc alloys come in many different forms (Category:Zinc alloys - Wikipedia), so called "pot metal" only being one of them. Strictly speaking, brass is a zinc alloy. As I said, I don't really care about this. It's important to you, so I'm trying to help you to the proper information. Better that than going by what you want to believe. For the sake of others as well. It would be a shame if others choose a Wismec mod rather than a Smok mod because they've been given the erroneous information that they're made of distinctly different materials that would be a shame (there are many good reasons to choose Wismec over Smok though, don't get me wrong).

Battery and charger advice would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome and glad you joined.
I have provided information which might help choosing/evaluating batteries. You may want to also consider purchasing battery carrying case or two and you should get a build/measuring meter and some spare wraps.
