Help a clueless n00b get started

I know pretty close to nothing about ecigs.

I tried a Blu and V2 but they don't produce the amount of vapor or offer the drag I want. I don't think I'm as addicted to the nicotine as I am to the act of taking drags and exhaling puffs of smoke.

Basically, I want a setup that will have a decent drag on it (I smoke American Spirit Regulars) and produce lots of vapor/"smoke". I want to use all the healthiest non-toxic parts and fluids. Good looking parts (art/tech/silver) are preferable as well.

I'm willing to spend money as long as I know the quality and setup is exactly what I'm looking for.

I am a techie and do have experience working with electrical devices so I can learn quickly.

Any advice / suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm new also, and started with Blu. They were enough to let me know that this might work for me, but not really what I wanted.

Here is a recent thread in another section of the forum with info on a good beginner kit.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ego-type-models/470972-best-starter-kit-i-ve-ever-seen.html

You will probably get lots of different advice, as everyone seems to have their favorites, but I started with something similar to this kit that I got at a local vape shop, and I've been pleased so far.

I too am a techie. probably was using a Simpson 260 before you were born. Listen to me!

Two weeks ago I bought my first starter kit. eGo style. Got 2 flavors that I liked. In three days, I had gotten too lazy to smoke the real thing.

Do not go overboard - yet. You will, but save that for later. A good starter kit is about $15 over the internet, and about $50. at a local storefront. Find a storefront you like and pay them the $50. Now you have a source of first hand answers - and a local supplier for the juice.

Once you get the hang of this, look all over the internet (Hardware and software). I use ebay. At this time you at least know a little. Buy another kit similar to what you have along with several extra atomizers. We all need backups!! In no time you will own several batterys and atomizers. They won't go to waste. You will wind up giving one or two to a curious friend .

Go slow, use you own head, remember Ohm's Law, and read this forum.

Now, if you only take one piece of advice from me it is:

Read, read, and read this forum!

Hello Neufusion.... Welcome to ECF. It's great to have you on board.
As you can see there are a lot of wonderful people here to give you a helping hand and suggestions.
With you having a techie background it will be no time before you'll be helping the new comer
and many others of us very soon.

I look forward to seeing what you finally settle on for a start up kit and in the future what else
you choose to go with.

Take care my friend.
And, again a Big Welcome to ECF!

Hello Neufusion,

I've been at this a while, and from looking around the forum you can see there are myriad answers. My suggestion is a tank, a battery and e-liquid.

For tanks I like the Kanger T3s. Screen Shot 2014-01-10 at 12.14.03 PM.jpg

It's a head, coil, and base. The heads seem to last forever (2 weeks - 3 months), and the coils, the part with the wicks and heating elements, last a few days to a few weeks, and the base (which screws onto the battery) lasts months. You can buy replacement coils, I use the 1.8mahs (They come in 1.5 - 2.4 mahs and unfortunately explaining the difference is beyond my payscale.)

And then a battery. I liked the ego 1100s because they reliably worked for me for 12 hours but they're harder and harder to find. Now I'm using the Evod 1100s. They're not as good but good enough. Many people seem to have moved on to variable voltage batteries but if a setup is working I try not to improve it as it becomes a money sink pretty quickly.Screen Shot 2014-01-10 at 12.23.58 PM.jpg

You then have to find choose your e-liquid. It's an interesting progression but my experience going through this myself and helping other people through it, is that initially you are trying to recreate the experience you have when you smoke a "real" cigarette. Interestingly once you get your nicotine needs reliably met, and start trusting your e-cig as a delivery method you'll find that recreating that "real" cigarette experience is less pressing. I suggest that whenever you have the urge to smoke try to actively vape for a few minutes before resorting to cigarette. I think you'll find that if you can vape enough to meet your nicotine cravings, and start to trust that that is possible you'll start to notice how much cleaner and more enjoyable vaping is compared to smoking. But none of that is possible if your nicotine cravings aren't met. It's a joyful day when you start craving your e-cig more than cigarettes.

So once you have those components you put the coil in the base, put the liquid in the head, screw the base onto the head, and then screw the tank (head, coil, and base) on to your battery. Then vape away.

I started with 36mg of nicotine e-liquid and am now down to 18 mg. I also find that starting higher helps to get enough nicotine into your system until you can work out all your vaping quirks and hitches, and then once you can vape more reliably you can lower the nicotine levels until you level out to a place where your cravings are satisfied.

There are a lot of artistic evods on the market and I've seen a few at the local brick and mortar stores.

Hope this helps. And best of luck!

This is really great advice, and it's just what I did. I read a lot here on the forums first, then went to a local shop with good customer reviews. My town, Oklahoma City, is a large city, and I'm fortunate we have lots of vape shops here.

They were very helpful and informative, and did not pressure me at all. Answered all my questions. The gal who helped me said she was impressed that I had taken the time to educate myself a little before I came in.:)

They had a nice juice tasting bar set up and I got to sample the juice to try to make up my mind what to start off with. Like so many newbies, I went in thinking I wanted something that tasted as much like my former cigarettes as possible. That turned out to be not the case at all. I'm finding my favorite is one called Banana Nut Bread, which I never would have picked if I had ordered from the internet to start.

The kit I bought was a deluxe starter kit and came with accessories and a couple of bottles of juice. It cost me about $58, but I got good equipment and they showed me exactly how to use it.

I started with 12 mg nicotine because I smoked ultra lights, but found it wasn't doing it for me after all. I went back to the shop a few days later and got some 18 mg which is stopping all my cravings and I am totally comfortable with it.

Mini protank, an EVOD, two eGo batteries, and a usb charger.

Get eliquid separately; if you cant sample the eliquid, maybe you can smell it.

Consider and MVP or an iTaste for a battery; alot of people also like the iclear tanks that come with them.

Note the miniprotank is GLASS, whereas alot of other tanks are plastic.

Moin,

I tried a Blu and V2 but they don't produce the amount of vapor or offer the drag I want. I don't think I'm as addicted to the nicotine as I am to the act of taking drags and exhaling puffs of smoke.

the most natural step from Blu or V2 cartomizers would be a 5 pack of Boge 510d. Those might even fit on your old Blu or V2 batteries, if they have normal 510 connectors. Of course you need to find liquids you like, because the Boge are not prefilled. I advise to buy those flavors you like both in 18mg/ml and in 0mg/ml. So you can down mix nicotine anytime.

Basically, I want a setup that will have a decent drag on it (I smoke American Spirit Regulars) and produce lots of vapor/"smoke". I want to use all the healthiest non-toxic parts and fluids. Good looking parts (art/tech/silver) are preferable as well.

The next step would be a better battery. I would suggest a Vision Spinner with 1300mAh and a 450mA USB charger cable. This will give you the runway to punch holes into the Boge 510d carto, and use an F15 carto tank. You could try other vaporizers, once you have better batteries. e.g. the line Kanger of EVOD and (mini) Protank 2 is both good quality, and newbie friendly.

Did you try the Low Resistance G6 Cartomizers for the Halo sells? they produce a nice amount of vapor. I also like their mini tanks.

Having said that I also like the ITaste VV V3 kits by innokin, you can get a kit for around $40. you cannot go wrong with any variable vltage or even regular Ego (as long as its over 650 mah, you will need two).
a protank is Highly recommended - nothing produces more volume. nothing. (the top coils like the iClears that Innokin sells are good, but protanks by Kanger produce more vapor and you can drag on them all day).

like the others said - you might want to change your nic level. also the ration of VG to PG affects the vapor - VG makes ore smoke and PG more throat hit. I personally like high VG some like the other way - find yours.

Sorry abou the long winded answer, but there are so many good options, and again the G6 is a Very nice device to have in the long run - specially for outdoors vaping once you "Tweak" it right.
