So whats this all about?
It's called folding at home and used by researchers to find cures for diseases.

What is folding @home?
it's a small program written by Stanford university you download, install and let run in the background while doing nothing.

Years ago the researchers realized they cant compute this stuff fast enough, even with the fastest super computers in the world it would take untold decades, so someone had an idea, instead of trying to crunch all the data at once on one computer why not break it up into pieces and send them to peoples pc's, this way we can use all those wasted CPU cycles, in effect creating the worlds biggest supercomputer.
You can pause it, set the amount of CPU to use, and even turn it off when you feel like it, or when it effects other things like gaming or videos etc. as long as it has a reasonable amount of time to finish the work it's fine, but too long (days) and the work is late and gets discarded.

Does it work?
Yes they have made many advances towards curing diseases with the help of this program, a similar effort was used to crack the human genome so quickly a few years back.

How do i find more information about folding?
Look here: Folding@home - Science

Ok looks cool so i want to help out what do i do?
simple, download here : Folding@home - HomePage
there are Windows as well as Mac and linux versions.

It will ask for the team number which is 223274. Enter that and your ECF name and your part of team ECF.

How do I know my/our stats?

Clicking on your name or team within the program will take you to the Main F@H stat server.
It will show your standing with the team and the current team stats.
But it will not show you anything under your name until you start to turn in work for the first time.
There are also links to different stat pages and information in the sub forum.....

Hey i noticed it wants access to the internet is it spying on me?
No! there is no back door action, no advertisements, nothing, it simply needs to connect to receive work and send results.

Is this popular?
Yes there are well known teams from many of your favorite websites.
in total there are almost 1.7 million people to date. and I have been involved for years.
There are people so into the rankings they have built multi cpu computer arrays running nothing but F@H just to stay ahead of the pack.

Ok so what's in it for me?
beyond making a positive impact on research, we can quickly move up the ranks and become one of the biggest teams out there.
Sometimes the fun is waiting for those 3 extra points so you can pass another team in the rankings.

Look at it this way, wouldn't it be great to know years from now when you or a loved one or friend comes down with an illness-you helped cure it in the past? The disease you help cure today could be the one you wake up with tomorrow.........

Ok what about more info?

Addendum by oldsoldier:

Once you have successfully folded one unit for Team ECF1 you can request the Team ECF title:

https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/forms/request-for-team-ecf-folding-home-title.51/respond

Please do not submit the form unless you have properly completed one work unit and have received points for completion. If your contributions page has not updated to show a completed work unit with points I'll skip your request and move on to the next and you'll have to request again after you have folded a unit and received credit.

Making multiple requests will not speed up your title, they only slow down the process for others waiting to get their title.

-------
1 As of 2012-12-07 you must also have received points for your contribution. Zero point work units are failures and do not count for the purpose of earning a Team ECF title.

Addendum by retired1

In fairness to those who are participating on a regular basis and as an incentive to keep the Team ECF title, regular participation is encouraged. Those who complete a work unit or two and then stop the client just to get the title risk losing the title. Inactivity for 6 months is also grounds for removing the title.

Excellent idea Thrasher. I have been grid computing for several years now, and will soon be approaching 100 years of run time from various computers. Began several years ago with folding@home, but moved to the World Community Grid. Both systems are designed to do mainly humanitarian research, studying many things like protein folding, malaria, schistosoma, cancer, muscular dystrophy, AIDS, etc.

Having the ECF presence as a team effort in these projects would be great! Don't really want to switch back to FAH after all this time, but if ECF would start a team on WCG I would most certainly be willing to change teams and join in.

Anyone else out there into grid computing? Check out his link above. It's for a great cause, and requires nothing on your part but to simply turn on your computer.

A great cause. I'd encourage everyone to investigate this. With so many multi-cpu systems around these days and the fact that browsing only uses a % of the cpu/gpu resources, it makes sense to donate the unused time particularly on desktop systems.

I use World Community Grid, not F@H....http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/index.jsp[/email]

Not to detract, but any chance of an ECF team there?

NOTE: With all these things, watch your CPU temp. Most can be adjusted to "Max % CPU use" if your CPU gets too hot.....

Tripple digits half way to home
I'd like to know about running multiple computers. I work for the state and most of the day I'm on a State owned machine. They have VERY strict rules and policies about downloading unapproved programs. I'm not on my personal computer very much anymore due to being moved to a place where "Big Brother" can keep a closer eye on me. If the time I do spend on my personal computer will help I'm all for it.

Results are starting to be posted and I've given some titles already. Please be sure to let us know what donor name you are using so I can give you the title on ECF.

Once we get it a little more organized I'll start a thread for this but until thrasher gets back with me with more information on how we can verify the contributions ( I suspect the list on the team page is like a leaderboard and will only show the top contributors -- but I might be wrong) it is going to require a little more hands on interaction.

So Far I've given titles to :
thrasher (thrasherbill on f@h)
eric_smith (eric_smith on f@h)

You can run it on multiple computers I'm running on two at home, just make sure you put in your donor name and team number when you configure the client.
