I seem to be one of those who needs their e-liquid extra strong and sweet. I've been using e-cigs since June 2008. I have loads of DIY stuff and was satisfied with several mixes. Then I got away from playing laboratory and settled on a couple of good ready-made e-liquids. I've been using them for over a year and all of the sudden, I can't taste them. I use low nic, so it's not a problem if the liquid gets in my mouth and when it does, it tastes good and strong. When I vape it though, I'm getting hardly any taste.

So I drug out all my DIY stuff and started playing around again, with not much satisfaction. I read some good reviews on Tasty Vapors liquids, so I ordered Bananas Foster and Tasty Finger (like Butterfinger candy bars) doublers. The doublers are just flavors mixed with PG/VG. They taste wonderful on my tongue and I could taste the Bananas Foster a bit when I vaped it, but not much. I can't taste the Tasty Finger at all when I vape it. I tried adding some Capella banana and a bit of cinnamon essential oil to the Bananas Foster, but it's not good. I know it needs some rum too, but I didn't have any. I got some of Tasty Vapor's sweetener. It's OK and it helps a little, but I never did like the taste of artificial sweeteners.

I've been reading for about 8 hours on this big forum and some of the smaller ones too. I did find excellent info here on DIY with charts and everything. I can't see the top of my kitchen counter now because of all the DIY stuff. I'm so overwhelmed.

I asked Geoff if he could send me an extra portion of just the flavoring mix and he told me maybe next time.:-x. (I even offered to pay for it.) These 2 flavors I bought are 4 oz. each and I can't afford to waste them. Can anybody tell me how to "fix" these Tasty Vapor doublers?

You seem pretty overwhelmed there, so let's backtrack to when you were satisfied ;). What brand/flavor were the ones that really did it for you? I have heard of this sudden 'flavor loss' happening, but it seems like the problem might be your nose as opposed to all of the flavorings you have suddenly losing flavor, especially since they still taste fine. Certain allergies and infections can cause this.

The best options for sweetener are Sucralose (which is what TV has except they dilute it), Ethyl Maltol (you can get it at Perfumer's Apprentice), and naturally sweet flavorings like LorAnn's Marshmallow.

I'm going to side with what PV stated above.

IMHO you are back to "smoking", although with a PV. I vape 4 or 5 different flavours in the course of the day, depending on the time of day and my mood. My main vape is a mix of RY and 555 at a ratio of 60/40.

I used to smoke menthols years ago. After months and months on menthols we could feel the TH but the cool refreshing taste was gone. I believe this is what is happening to you, with your 2-3 favorite juices.

You might want to roll your vapour and allow it to vent trhough your nose like a cigar smoker, that is where the "real" taste is at, not the tongue.

Thanks guys! I tried the "rolling" thing and it works a bit. It feels very strange though, but it's something new and I will keep at it. (I always thought blowing smoke out your nose was weird looking.) My main flavors were Toasted Toffee (RY4) and 555 too!

I did order some more flavors including marshmallow and cotton candy. I will look for recipes for Bananas Foster and Butterfinger. If anybody finds them and wants to direct me to them, I would be most grateful. Also recipes for RY4 and 555 too.

I'll order some watermelon next time and give that a try. I have bubblegum and I do like that.

Does this "lack of taste" thing ever go away? (I don't have a cold or sinus problems.) In fact, I haven't had a cold since I started using e-cigs!

sounds to me like a simple case of "desensitization". Try going for another spectrum of flavor completely like switch off from the chocolate, caramel type stuff and go for fruit flavors for a few weeks...then come back to the toffee, etc. Our bodies/brains/tastebuds..can desensitize over time when we have repeated and especially strong exposure to any smell or taste. I live about 7 miles from a paper mill and it smells horrid, but folks that live within a mile or two and have lived there for most of their lives don't even smell it. It's all in what you get used to so switch around and you'll likely not lose your sensitivity as easily.

Hi Janet -
Haven't been vapping as long as you (7 months), but just run into the same problem as you. Settled on Green Tea for vapping and after awhile, ('bout 2 months) can't taste the tea. I think switching flavors while vapping might help. I noticed when I was vapping 3-4 different flavors during the day, I could taste each flavor.

As for DIY doublers - less is more. Made the mistake of using too much flavoring and couldn't taste anything. You can always add more later. I also find if I let my juice age for a bit, it tastes better.

VikingVapor sells what I consider a true doubler....Double flavor strength without any added volume...and it has nicotine in it, your choice of strength. You can just add PG or VG and make it as string as you want. They have excellent service and fast shipping.

One warning about trying to make flavors stronger....there is a threshold after which all your going to taste is bitterness. I agree with the person that said you may need to switch to a different type of flavor for awhile. You'll have no trouble selling the doubler from TV in the classifieds.

Also....for adding sweetness and or buffering the bitterness of too much flavoring...ethyl maltol from Perfumers Apprentice. Also Honey flavoring from PA.

Good luck!

Thanks everybody for all your help. I vaped grape for a few days and now I can taste my good ol' standbys (except for that darn Toasted Toffee). I thinks there may have been a change on the manufacturer's end. I have also discovered cartomizers and for me they seem to improve flavor too.

I'm still gonna try to fix my TV doublers. My past experience has taught me that if it tastes good on your tongue, the vapor will not have nearly as much taste, but I will try the the suggestion of using less of the TV. Also, I have learned that Lorikay's warning about the threshold of using too much flavoring is very true. I got some FlavourArt flavorings and they are really strong (stronger than anything I have tried). If you get too much in the mix, it doesn't even taste like a flavor, it just tastes yuck! This also happened with cherry Tasty Puff flavoring - it is especially strong. I have fixed several pre-made liquids by adding a bit of flavoring. I like playing around with DIY from time to time, but when I find a good pre-made liquid from a trusted supplier, that's the easiest way for me. Thanks again for all your help! ~ Janet

I understand your frustration. It's upsetting when you find something you like and the vendor either changes the recipe or it's inconsistent. That's what got me started with DIY. Now I prefer my juice over most of the ones I've bought. There are still a couple I can't duplicate that I love, but I'm not willing to waste money not knowing if it will be the same as I received the last time I bought it.

One thing I found that helps me when my tastes buds stop working right is to vape a mint or menthol for awhile. It brings it back usually within an hour or so.
