We really need a battery safety sticky...
I have asked forum moderators for this a couple of times already.
There already is one, but it's hidden all the way down by the Supplier Forum.
- http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/announcements-news/129007-warning-rechargeable-batteries-apvs.html Why the forum administrators chose to put it way down there I have no clue.
The above link is one of ECF moderator rolygate's articles on battery safety. There is no mention of sub ohm battery requirements in this guide. The only thing it says about rba's is this:
"rba use in mechmods
RBAs or RTAs with sub-ohm coils are used in mechanical APVs in order to deliver super high power vaping. Some people use huge wattage and this means a high amp draw. You should only use the finest quality batteries for this heavy-duty application. In theory a 26650 IMR cell (Li-Mn) is the best choice for this although most devices use an 18650 or 18700. Please try to play safe here as the batteries are driven very hard by this application, they may need to supply up to 10 amps (especially if there is a coil/wick fault). Get a multimeter so you can see what is happening, guessing is not a good idea here. Don't take any short cuts if doing this."
After another such story like this one about 2 weeks ago, I contacted one of the moderators and told him/her of my concern about these irresponsible vape shops and asked him/her what we could do as a community. This moderator responded with this:
- "I'll bring up the subject of safety and sub ohm vaping with the staff and see what we can come up with."
I was then sent the following info by PM the next day:
- "Good Afternoon, Gentlemen
[*]You are being approached for a very important mission for ECF. Should you chose to accept it, we would like you to write up a document that details the safety aspects of using mechanicals and the perils that may befall an individual if they fail to follow proper safety procedures.
[*]
[*]The information collected from you will be collated and a definitive document created to be placed in ECF's library. This will allow the ECF membership to educate those who know little to nothing about mechanicals and sub ohm vaping.
[*]
[*]ECF isn't going to take a "don't do it" stance with sub ohm vaping. But we are going to take a stance that unless you know what you're doing and take every safety precaution, it's not something you should be doing. So your input should reflect that stance.
I hope that I haven't overstepped any rules by sharing this information which was done by PM. I appologize ahead of time if I have.
But be aware that things are in the works for a guide that members will be able to direct others to via a link to information resources which can guide those who need education about sub ohm vaping and the safe use of mechanical mods with RBA's. I sent the links to specific articles from my blog that I thought should be included in this guide.
I personally think a sticky in either the New Members, General, APV, or RBA forums would be a better idea, but the ECF board has decided otherwise. I don't think it could hurt for members to PM moderators to express their desire for having a sticky in a more prominent place. If enough members request this, then maybe it will happen.
