If you had a choice between the two, which one would you go with?
If you're asking about variable voltage vs. fixed voltage (such as ego or mechanical - and sorry for putting them on the same category), I personally think that:
If you're building your own coils you can adjust the resistance and than using one voltage setting doesn't really limit you because the wattage depend on the mod voltage output + the atomizer's resistance, so you want to control at least one of them.

Again I apologize for some of these dumb questions.

no such thing as a stupid question

I started with your basic EGo Variable voltage battery and clearomizer tanks. The Variable voltage is nice because you can find that sweet spot with your juice.

and I have tried numerous other devices. mech mods, telescoping mech mods, and all that jazz. I personal have found an Itaste MVP 2 is the best for me, with a kanger pro tank 2 at this point in my journey... it does what I want it to do and I get the flavor that I want and i love the feel of it...

I'm still fairly new to vaping as well, just over a month into it.A very beginner friendly set up i have been using,is a vamo mod with a kanger pro tank or even the mini pro tank. This will give you that light saber look, and it wont kill your bank account.I have maybe $65 in this set up with the vamo and both tanks.

If you are like me though,it wont be long before you will want to start rebuilding.I have started doing my own micro coils with cotton wicks, and it blows the regular coil/wick set up away.I have also already started making my own juices, that is fun as well, plus there are so many good recipes listed on this site, that you can pretty much make any flavor you want from the ones people have listed.

Wow, I'm still new as well, and i have rebuilt coils and have fun doing it, But, haven't tried making juice yet... I will have to check that out... Thanks for the info..!

I started with an eGo kit but soon found that I wasted a good bit of money on it. I wish I'd gotten an MVP 2.0 or Itaste VV and a Mini or Regular Protank II atomizer and learned how to rebuild its atomizer heads from the get go. I would have saved a lot of cash! I still use them even after upgrading to 'beefier' devices and RBAs.

Nothing wrong with egos get a twist you can always put an atty on it as you advance and comes in handy for a quick taste of new juice.
Get a
Ego twist or a couple
glass tanks that take standard 510 cartos.I like Phiniac(skip plastic IMO)
510 Standard Resistance Cartomizers (a bunch)
A carto puncher
a couple of HH .357 long barrel attys
a nice drip tip
If you really get into it save money and buy a Provari and a Reo Grand don't waist money by searching for the best when you can just get right to the point and buy it.

Ignore the person that said there is nothing wrong with ego twists...he is steering you incorrectly

You haven't given anybody a price range that you feel comfortable with...you haven't made it clear exactly how important the light saber look is to you

If you want great options for a good price then steer towards the innokin lines

The vv v3 is cheap and slim and perfect but it doesnt look like a light saber but it does outclass the ego twist and vision spinners easily
For about 20-30 bucks...don't waste your time getting it in a kit...the kits are usually trash except for the battery...unless you need a usb charger

Also ignore the iclear 16s that guy was trying to push...those are gross...try something higher quality like the smoktech t-dux 2.0 line with the single coil 1.8 if you want to get into a good tank for about 7 bucks...the coils are replaceable and like 1.75 a piece

The vv v3 and the t-dux 2.0 is the cheapest acceptable way to get into vaping at around 40 bucks out the door

If you want to spend a little extra money for a longer battery life then get an mvp 2.0..i personally dont need that much battery life but some people do...depends on how likely you are to be a faithful charger or be near an outlet when you need to charge...you can vape while charging with either of these

Now if you want a light saber look and are willing to give up a little bit of features and add a little cost...the vamo 3 and vamo 5 are both very popular...the vape will be the same pretty much as the mvp 2.0 but you will give up some function for the cooler look

If you want to pay more money than that then seriously just find a vv vw that you looks cool you know? Or find 3 that you like the looks of and put up a new post...

If you dont give us a price range you will get every answer under the sun...you'll get people suggesting ego blech with iclear blech on it....all the way up to provaris with nautilus and mech mods

I've bought a New Smoke Fusion starter kit (I think it's a relatively unknown brand) when I started vaping a few weeks ago although I don't really recommend it. The mod is similar to an eGo (so it's not hard to start off with) and vapes pretty nice but filling it with e-juice is a pain because the liquid just won't go down the tank properly. It only took me a few days to buy a more decent but still simple kit with much better battery life and a nice vaping experience. It was an eVod 1100 mAh and I think I'll stick with this one for a while untill I have enough money and knowledge for the more complicated mods. I've even a bought a few extra tanks with it including a ProTank 2. I really recommend it for a beginner (just like me LOL). It's even easy to clean the included tank out for a different juice and there are various Youtube videos about how to do that.

Reasons i prefer the itaste vv v3 over the ego twist/spinners etc.

I prefer mini usb over the proprietary charger that charges directly to the contact point which can sometimes be wet
I like the passthrough option for the itaste that the twist/spinners lack
I like the ohm reader which at some point will be crucial if he builds a coil
I like that the itaste can be rested on it's side or on it's base equally easily without tipping or rolling
I like that the itaste can be turned off
I like that the itaste tells you how much battery life and voltage your battery is currently putting out
Did i mention that the itaste charges off mini-usb so you can replace the charger super easily?

I own both of these and the twist gets zero usage and the itaste gets 100% of my vaping business

Rebuildables are wonderful but before you buy them make sure you can build your own coils. Even though you can pay to have it done for you at vape shops, it's nicer when you can deal with it on your own. Check out some YouTube videos on rebuilding, say, the Kayfun and see if that's something you'd be willing to do every other week or so.

Kayfun... That's what it was called lol. I think. I didn't have my phone with me when I was in there to take pictures or notes lol. My bad.

But I'm a pretty fast learner. So I should be able to pick up on it fast.

Lol. I didn't even realize how dumb that question was to ask in a forum dedicated to E-cigs. I'm leaning towards it because I'm Chinese and the chi you sounds almost like my Chinese name lol.

Friend of mine was trying to explain the difference between a free floating disk? And then something about magnets instead of a spring? It was hard for me to follow lol.

He was probably talking about the Nemesis (Mech Mod). It has the switch on the button, usually with a spring internally. However, you can buy magnet rings for it, in order to replace the spring. It's a nice upgrade. In addition, you can sort of adjust the switch by utilizing an additional magnet ring. If you want to convert your mech mod to a regulated, you can always get a "Kick" or "Kick 2". Be aware though, it doesn't fit in all mech mods.

Regarding the mod, I have to agree with what has been said already. Get a VV/VW device with an exchangeable battery. I used to have a VV from Apollo. Was a good device for a year, then the batteries would hold the charge. You won't have such problems with the other devices and the batteries themselves are cheaper than getting a new device.
If you want to learn to make you own coils, you could for example get a Kanger ProTank 2. For it you can buy replacement coils (as other tanks do) or you can rebuild the coil and wick yourself. I have a few Kanger ProTank 2 and replace my coils. For details just search here on the sub-forums or YouTube.

I too am very new to vaping. I started out with a South Beach Air vaporizer and loved it but decided on something with a little more power. I did a lot...ALOT of research and I decided to get a Vamo V3. I love it. It is very easy to use and you can use the 18350 battery for a mini mod or stack 2 for a larger one. I liked that option. It also seems that for the money the MVP 2.0 is a pretty good mod also. Good Luck and don't get discouraged because there is a lot out there.
