Kanthal is a Trademark for a Family of Metal Alloys. And there can be Subtle Differences between Specific Alloys. Most Vaper's use Kanthal A1. But there are Other "Kanthals" available.

Here's a Cross-Reference Table showing Different Alloys and there common Names.

Alloy Cross Reference | Coil elements, resistance wire, kilns, foam cutting | Resistance Wire | A Division of Hyndman

The Most Likely Culprit to a Bad Taste is what TheRussianVaper mentioned. Residual Oil(s) on the Wire from Manufacturing/Spooling.

I would Try giving a Piece of the Wire a Quick Wipe with a paper towel that has a Drops of Rubbing Alcohol on it. Followed by a Wipe with a Moist paper Towel.

If the coil Still has a Bad Taste after you do your Normal Dry Burn/Wick, there might be a Problem with that Particular Wire Alloy.
