Help to start vaping

Hi there,

I have been trying to work out which, out the huge choice of e cigarettes, where to start.

I tried an e cig called zebra a few years ago and it just made me cough. I have smoked roll ups for years and find that normal cigs make me cough too. I smoke yellow drum with a menthol filter and don't cough!

Can someone please suggest the closest experience to what I smoke if that is possible. I have read lots of reviews and still have no idea which would be right for me without trying lots of different brands

Thank you, in anticipation

A soon to be ex-smoker!!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here!:)

If you are looking for a setup here are some possible options for you to consider:

A variable v/w (twist/spinner) is usually recommended over a "non variable" v/w battery. It allows you to adjust your settings to get a better "vape". Some flavors taste better at higher voltages than 3.7v

1. joyetech Ego-C Twist
2. Vision Spinner
3. Innokin iTaste vv v3
4. Innokin iTaste MVP v2 (or even better an MVP 20 watt)
5. eLeaf iStick

The first 3 are fall into the "ego style" category of battery (with variable voltage). They range in size from 600mah to 1300mah. The higher the mah the longer the battery will last between charging.

The 4th & 5th ones are a step up from an "ego style" battery in that they are smaller variable v/w box mods with a very big battery (2400-2600mah). It will last many vapers a whole day before it needs recharging. The MVP is probably one of the most popular batteries for someone upgrading from an "ego style" battery. The iStick is also very popular.

I suggest buying only name brand Joyetech Twist or Vision Spinner ego batteries if you choose to go this route. BTW, "ego" is merely a type of battery, not a brand name. Buying "generic" ego batteries is always going to be hit or miss...mostly miss.

You will also need to purchase a tank (the juice attachment) and extra coils. The mini Nautillus, mini Aerotank or regular size Aerotank (all made of glass & all have adjustable airflow control) are very popular.

Why would you want a glass tank (you may be thinking to yourself)? Here is a great resource regarding "tank cracking" eliquid by ECF member Baditude: Something Safe for Cinnamon and Citrus Flavors

Your best thing to do is get to a vape shop and try some devices and juices. There is no juice that will exactly mimic the taste of smoking, (thank goodness for that), but there are tons that have menthol or menthol can be added to. In lieu of that, it's a hit and miss thing till you find your juice. As far as hardware, do yourself a favor and buy some good quality stuff to start, don't go for the cheapest. I started with an Innokin Itaste VV3 and a Kanger Protank II and they worked great. I think if I had gone with a simple ego and and CE4 tank of some such, I might have failed as they are prone to fail. Good luck on your journey to get away from the smokes, vaping can save your life!!

What he said ^^
Also I am pretty sure you will need and want to try a few different ejuices. What might taste the same as your brand of cigarettes will taste different for each person. You might find an ejuice that is close to your cig brand but there is no ejuice the same. Congratulations on taking the first step in ordering your first ecig and ejuice. As for coughing with the ecig, I did that too at first and now I ca take big long hauls with no coughing.

Hi Becky...

I live near you! :)

I smoked roll-ups (all sorts really AL, GV, Drum blue and yellow, loose leaf).

You might find ALL e-cigs a little coughy at first. I coughed even using cruddy E-Lites (what a waste of money those useless sticks are...). My missus coughs puffing on any of my e-cigs, so you might be unlucky, like we were. My missus never had the confidence to quit smoking and take up Vaping, but I managed it moving up from simple hardware to more advanced stuff.

These days, I can vape almost any e-cig, right up to mega-power stuff. It takes some getting used to, but if you want to do it, you will.

The most useful lesson I learned was how to inhale differently than a roll-up. Took me about a week to get the hang of it.

off right now to the shops, I'll pop in on this thread later... :)

I wish someone pulled me aside when I was first getting started and forced me to get an MVP2 and a protank 2 right out the gate.

No cig-a-likes, no ego batteries, no plastic tanks or ce4s... it would have been much easier for me to start with a quality set up and would have saved me lots of money in the long run.

Find the aspire atlantis tank, the aspire CF SUB battery, a 5 pack of 0.5 ohm coils and some 70% VG 30%PG juice with 6mgs of nicotine. You will not regret this set up.

I could literally throw every other piece of kit I own in the garbage and not miss any of it. THIS is a perfect, easy, no hassle, simple, satisfying vape.

I been lurking these forums for a bit now and learned a lot from these more experienced vapers.
Myself, since I quit those nasty roll ups, went for a liquid that gave me a more sweety or candy like taste rather than tobacco taste.
I started with the basic starter kits, but now that I'm hooked on the vape craze, slowly building my collection up to stuff I can use (hide) at work and a variety for relaxtion use.
You will get some great hints from these folks here.

Usually I recommend the mvp2... But the istick may be a contender too. If you go mvp go with the 20w, you'll thank yourself later. Mvp is a durable mod with a lot of people using them. The istick has had some problems, but it's always a good idea to check out a few YouTube reviews before putting your money down.
As far as tanks, the protank 2 is a great tank for the money, but top of the line seems to be the nautilus with the bvc heads. The nautilus may be a bit much to start as you are caughing with light vapor, so I'd say start with protank.
Defiantly go to a local shop to try flavors, maybe a higher vg juice would help, as the shop if they have higher vg juice. There are basically two bases used for eliquid, pg stands for propylene glycol, it's thinner viscosity, carys flavor better but gives a harsh throat hit. Vg stands for vegetable glyceryl has a thicker viscosity, creates more vapor but is much smoother.
I coughed quite a bit when I switched to blu, but keep trying and you'll get used to it.

Good luck! We are here when you need us!!

@BeckyBoo1984:

What kind of form factor are you looking for? There is a plethora of different shapes.... From a cigarette form factor aka cig a like (which imho sucks..... but some people enjoy them) to "sharpie" size ones to bigger tubes and even boxes about the same size as a pack of smokes....

Another thing.... I don't want to burst your bubble but I will anyways.... You will not find an ecig that tastes like a cigarette (thank god! smoke tastes awful). Try instead to find a flavor you enjoy... Before you know it, you will not believe that you once wanted something that smelled or tasted like a cigarette.

There are plenty. 101vape.com usually has good gear at decent prices. Kidneypuncher isn't too bad either. I go RTDVapor for all my battery needs. I've also bought from GotVapes.com, Eciggity.com and Fasttech among others which the names escape me. I haven't gotten burned yet. Check out the supplier subforum you're bound to find a reputable dealer with decent prices where shipping doesn't take a week or four. Gotvapes can be pretty spendy compared to other online retailers, but they are really close to me so shipping is like 2 days. Eciggity is based out of hawaii.

I tried vaping with a Evod last year and didn't quit analogs. I just couldn't get the volume i wanted from the Evod. For me a good plume on exhale is important to me feeling I'm getting my "smoke". I had a friend who is into vaping and he recommended the Eleaf iStick and a Aspire Nautilus tank. I couldn't be happier. I have still not found a all day vape, but I have three that hit nice and I bought a Nautilus mini for one of them so I can easily switch tanks.
