I am not a complete eejit, but cannot work out how to add an avatar to my profile. So maybe I AM a complete eejit???? Can someone walk me through it, step by step, like talking to a five year old? or maybe a complete eejit??

I'm viewing from my phone, so I can't tell how many posts you've made. You might need to meet minimum.... Guessing 15. Welcome!
It seems to be the only thing around that doesn't have a minimum post requirement (I think). At the top, right of the screen there is an option called "Settings". Click that one and scroll down till you find "Edit Avatar". That should get you there. Do note that Avatar is what shows with every post. There is also an option for profile picture. That one only shows when some looks into your profile.
