Help with DIY burnt flavor

Ok,

I've got a problem with my ADV e-juice I made up where it taste burnt in my VV battery but not in my non VV battery.

Here is my setup
e-juice
20% pomegranate + 3% sweetener
Device
Mini Protank II on a ego style non VV battery and an EVOD VV battery.
coil is 2.2ohm

On my non VV battery fully charged I get a burnt flavor for a couple puffs and then it's gone. The vapor production isn't all that great either. On the EVOD VV set to 4.0v I get a really bad burnt taste but lots of vapor production. If I dial it down to 3.6v its like the non VV battery. Here is the strangest part, once the tank starts to get really warm is when I notice the flavor starting to come out really nice.

I've double checked the battery voltages at different settings and it's right on and I've double checked the coil's resistance. I had the flavor at 15% with 2% sweetener but I couldn't taste anything so I upped it to 20%/3%. I've not tried any other flavor in it but I do have another flavor steeping right now. I'm thinking about trying that one to see if I get the same results. It could be i'm numb to this flavor now as the flavor comes and goes.

On the EVOD VV set to 4.0v I get a really bad burnt taste but lots of vapor production. If I dial it down to 3.6v its like the non VV battery.

First off non regulated a full charged battery is 4.2 volts but under load(while being fired) voltage will drop. The amount it drops depends on the battery capacity ,stste of charge ,length of draws and freqency of the draws. A regulated device should maintain the same voltage to the coil(s) until the battery is close to fully discharged.

It is best to change flavors often as most of us experience flvor fade fairly fast. Most days I vape 4 to 6 different flavors.

I've notice burnt taste from a non vv battery and no burnt taste from my vv battery set to a lower voltage. There are a few factors in play here.

1 burnt coil
2 to high a voltage
3 formulation of the mix

the last being the most prominent. If to much sweetener is used for instance the mix will vape fine at first provided a new coil is used. But the mix will burn that coil very quickly. If you remove the coil clean it dry burn it then vape the juice again it will be fine but again get burnt very quickly. If you reduce the voltage it will take longer to get burnt but again will eventually burn. So there are many factors here to sort out. Now onto the flip side if the coil is already burnt and caked it takes longer to heat to proper temp. So it takes longer to warm and that's what gives you no vapor at first then lots of vapor the longer it's used. you will most likely notice your juice is turning darker inside the tank the longer you vape.

Try doing a quick little twist on the tank to loosen it slightly... if your juice is kinda' thick, it'll allow the juice to permeate the coil and wick again. I had this problem before with my Pro tank II and it worked very well. If it works and continues, try taking one of the flavor wicks out and try it again. If this is the issue, you should see a little bubble float to the top of the tank. If you don't do it quick enough, it'll get the juice into the shaft and you'll be vaping gurgles. If that doesn't work, then either thin the juice a little with some PG or just replace the coil/wick. (it worked for me...)

Side note... a battery's internal resistance plays a part in how much voltage drops too.

So the total effective resistance would be the resistance of the coil plus the resistance of the battery.

Yeah, I think I'm hitting all of those. I made the batch according to the recipe but then when the flavor was muted I added more flavoring and sweetener to the mix. It's probably a combination of all three. Yes it does change color over time but I've heard that it was due to the sweetener caramelizing in the juice that was causing this.

The juice is 70/30 PG/VG mix and one of the flavor wicks has alredy been removed. It is a thin juice but gets thicker towards the end.

Ok, so I got home tonight and decided to give my tank a good wash. I took it apart and rinsed it out good with distilled water and then put the coil on a battery and tried to try burn it. No good, it would not glow but from one side and after a few tries it burnt out. I guess it was on it's way out anyway. So, I grabbed a coil I had rebuilt and gave it a good rinse and decided to dry burn it because I recalled it not tasting so well when i first built it. I got it dry burning real good and the coil was glowing from the inside out. I dry burned it till there was no more fumes coming off it and then put it back together. This time it tasted weak at 3.6v so I decided to crank it up to 4v and wow! This is the first rebuild that I've done that didn't taste burnt and no burnt rubber smell either, it was great!

I'm refering to a juice that is already steeped and reached it's final color. The color change I'm refering to is when the burnt coil transfers it's burnt residue from the coil to the juice.

Me too I was told that it was the sweetener carmolizing from the heat generated by the coil. My vape juice steeped is clear. I do tend to agree with you though cause the color change doesn't happen on a newly rebuilt coil or a new coil.

Well I think my other burnt rubber problem is going to be a non issue going forward. I just got my 5 pack of replacement coils in today and thy all seem to have a silicon center post insulator instead of the old rubber ones. Can't wait to rebuild these

Me too I was told that it was the sweetener carmolizing from the heat generated by the coil. My vape juice steeped is clear. I do tend to agree with you though cause the color change doesn't happen on a newly rebuilt coil or a new coil.

Sweetner is the most prominent cause of coils getting burnt quickly along with creams.

Not really. More like needs a good cleaning and dry burn. But sure rebuilding is good to and it's cheap.

Ahhhh.....and your journey begins. IMHE the nre pro tank 2 seems to burn the coils hotter. So what I had to do was adjust my E-liquid ratio. Since I use 100% VG, I was using 20% alcohol to dilute it. What I discovered on this new Pro Tank 2 is it will flood. So a new problem found, flooding. SO then I had to make the juice thicker, then it tasted burned. All in all you are going to have to fiddle with your ratio's to make the juice just right. Too thin and it will flood, too thick and it will taste burned. No golden answer here, you will just have to ply with the juice ratio to get it right(write it down so when you get it, you are done). My 2 cents....

Every time I try to dry burn them after having used them for a little bit I seem to pop the coil and then I'm having to rebuild anyway lol. Maybe if I don't wait so long to try and clean/dry burn the coil.

That's how I do it as well... it'll usually be okay so long as the voltage is really low.
