I agree with the diacetyl comment, but if you read this article thoroughly Popcorn Lung Couple Goes Bankrupt After Twenty Million Dollar Win - ABC News that couple did NOT blow all 20 million. An unspecified amount went to other workers at the factory. This is just another example of media hype and misleading article titles. I would prefer for media to actually represent the facts of a story they report on for a change.

How can we know if there is diacetyl in our juices? Is there a list somewhere?

Diacetyl (or one of it's very similar alternatives) could be an anything that lists flavorings in the ingredients, including some 'natural flavorings'. I believe that it also occurs in some natural products, in very minute amounts.

It's still used in many, many food and drink products.

It's also been linked to Alzheimer's, recently:

I've seen some report verbal assurances from Capella's flavorings that they don't use it. The Perfumer's Apprentice flavorings are pretty up-front about the issue. I've not investigated any e-juice vendors, though.
