Hi ECF folks.

Not really a forum person, so feels odd posting an intro thing, but thought I'd try it out. vaping backstory for me is that I smoked when young, quit for many years, and then when I went back into education grabbed a bar job to help myself get by. No surprises this led to a brief relapse into smoking, so thought I'd give vaping a try and found it infinitely better than any of the other nicotine replacement products I'd used in the past (patches were useless, lozenges helped me quit smoking but still led to the occasional one when out for drinks). Couple of years on and I actually thoroughly enjoy vaping.

Been thinking of dipping my toe into the mech world, and after 6 months or so of mooch blogposts (I lurked here for that time), vaping biker videos, etc., etc., I'm starting to feel confident that I won't do anything stupid with a mech! Also want to start making my own clapton builds (as in putting the wires together, not just wrapping prebuilt wire round a rod which I've done since I started) and maybe trying out DIY juice recipes, so have delved into the forum world. Also, mech wise, I'll be looking for second hand tubes, so thought the forums were preferable to and more trustworthy than ebay!!

Anyway, if you populate other forums, you'll probably see this exact same post pop up a few times in the coming week, but I swear, I'm not a bot!

All the best, Nathan

Welcome to the ECF. For quite a few of us, it's the only forum we post on, so it took us awhile to get used to it, too.

It's nice that you've found vaping as totally enjoyable as many of us have, and that it helped you get off the smokes. It worked wonders for me and helped me quit my 42+ years, 1 - 1.5 pack a day habit. I honestly thought I'd never be a former smoker...until I discovered vaping.

There are quite a few mech people on ECF, so I'm sure you'll have no trouble getting recommendations for some and choosing one, getting any questions answered, etc. I don't have nor want any myself, but that's another great thing about vaping, IMO = people have so many different choices of gear they can use to accomplish the same thing.

DIYing your own eliquids is definitely fun and cost-saving, and it's not difficult to do either. You might want to pay a visit to the DIY Eliquid subforum of the General Eliquid forum when/if you get closer to wanting to try it. Lots of info and advice there for newbies, about methods for measuring the ingredients, recipes for various eliquids, the flavoring companies most use, the supplies you'll need, places to get good deals on PG, VG, nic base, etc.

Forgot this - If you'll be interested in browsing and/or buying things on here in the Classified forum...you'll need to become a Verified member to access them. You can find the info. on how to become Verified...on the main Forum page, about 2/3 of the way down the page. There'll be a link there to check it out.

Thanks for the welcome, guys, and extra thanks to JCinFLA for letting me know about needing to be verified for the classifieds. I'll do that this evening. I'm looking forward to delving into the more DIY aspects of vaping. Love tinkering with things, so think it'll be right up my alley, and it'll be good to get people's opinions on solid places to pick up high quality wire (the biggest place to get wire in the UK, there stuff isn't great and just doesn't last long compared to the couple of high quality pre-built coil sets I've bought) and flavourings.

Also, got to second the great thing about variety in vaping, and it's not just person to person. My tastes in vaping have changed quite a bit over the last two years also, and there are things that I like that I didn't expect to, and things I thought I'd love that I just haven't.

Quick question (to mods or whomever). As I said, I've never been a forum kind of person before. Can you "tag" people in posts using an @ for example, if you wanted to reply to multiple people in one post (like you can on social media platforms nowadays) or can you just reply to each one individually using the reply function?

Hi Nathan and welcome! I'm not a mod, but I can tell you the @ thing works and after the first few letters helps you out with a prompt listing members. For multiple reply the mutiquote feature works quite well to keep everything in one post.

Sounds like you're taking a good approach to entering the mech world. Done responsibly it's a great way of having a setup that you can care for yourself and not worry about the electronics failing down the road. Be aware things have been a little slow getting verified here, but yes, it's more trustworthy than eBay. Definitely don't even consider eBay or even Amazon for things like your batteries. I'm sure you've read enough from Mooch about the issues of rewraps and counterfeits. Stick to the name brand stuff from reliable vendors and take that risk out of the equation.

Thanks, @Eskie. I don't know why I didn't just think to try it out. Oh well!!! Yeah, safety is my main priority, plus to me it's not like learning is a chore. I'm one of those super nerdy types who thoroughly enjoys getting into things and wants to know what I'm doing to a descent level of detail. I'd never even thought about buying batteries from ebay or amazon and didn't know people did that; just sounds like asking for trouble. Always bought from shops with good reputations, plus in the UK we have 18650.uk and Fogstar, the latter of which has been where I've just made a purchase and think they'll become my only place for batteries now. Ben at Fogstar seems to follow Mooch religiously (Ben posts on a UK based forum which I've joined also) and when I got my first order through the other day he threw in a couple of extra wraps, a couple of extra insulators and a safety card on battery use. That safety focus was enough to make me not want to shop anywhere else!

Are you a mech user yourself? If so, can I ask you a quick question (actually not quick as I type a lot in even simple replys as you can see here) that there's no rush to reply to? I just posted it in another thread, but if I could pick your brains too, that'd be fantastic.

I'm not a big mech user. For me they're part of my emergency stash in the light of threats against vaping here in the US. I'm pretty much a temp control vaper, so while I'm comfy using a mech I have nowhere near the experience of others here who can probably give you a more accurate answer. But by all means post your questions.

It's a simple A vs. B question that I'm trying to get feedback on without starting yet another thread. If you haven't used the setups, then your answer will be a short "no clue"!! If you have used either, and have any thoughts, that'd be appreciated. Here's what I posted in another thread on advice for first time mech buyers.

"Hi guys. New member here. I was going to post a similar question, but thought it might make it cleaner to just ask here (guessing there are a lot of A vs. B. threads clogging up the boards from new guys such as myself). I'm in the same boat of looking to get my first mech, after spending a fair bit of time watching Vaping Biker's youtube, Vaping Bogan's tubes for noobs video and of course reading as much as possible from Mooch (I lurked here for 6 months or so before joining). Going to read the Beginner's Guide posted above tonight. The options I've been looking at have been either:

1) SOI shorty with 24mm Comp RDA, or
2) Broadside/Admiral with the Culverin RDA
(want to run either as a "kit")

Last option could be to go for a Vindicator (as soon as Custom Vapes in the UK gets their next order in) to take advantage of both the descent maH and the high 35A headroom of Samsung 30Ts. That comes to the bottom of my list as only one of my builds (3 coil on the CSMNT coming in at 0.12) goes above a 25A current draw. Usually stick to 0.17/8 on a dual coil set up. Also, not that fussed about running the Admiral with a 20700 as I have plenty of Sony VCT5As and Vapcell 25A/2800 maH batteries (as tested by Mooch) so happy to use that with the adapter (extra safety plus the Vaping Biker's tests showed less, although negligable, voltage drop running it that way).

Before I bother people with another A vs. B thread, can anyone who has experience of both the Shorty and either the Broadside or Admiral chime in? I guess my questions would be as much about the RDAs as the mechs alone, so thoughts on using them as "kits" would be appreciated.

All the best.

edit: spelling, plus to note that either the SOI or Broadside setups would be bought second hand, and I have a couple of leads, although happy to shop around on here too. Also, the SOI I've got my eye on is copper, whereas the Broadside is brass, just for full info."

Honestly, this is truly one you'd be better off asking in the mech mod forum Mech Mods and also, I highly doubt anyone is going to be offended by yet another "A" vs "B" thread, they happen literally all the time.
Anna

The "literally all the time" aspect was what I was worried about! If you're a heavy participant on forums it must be a bit fatiguing to constantly see people looking for the same basic info!!
