Hey Hoog, ? about "protected" batteries

Karr posted his "flashlight meltdown" over in the modders section and said he had a short in the connector.
I had a 14250 get really hot in a 5v boxbod the same day, heat shrink started melting away, not sure why.

My other protected batteries all say "Short circuit, overcharge and discharge protection"
My 10440's don't say anything about protection.
My 14250's say "Protection circuit".

What's the deal with these batteries?

What was explained to me:

The manufacturers buy 'cells', some are complete, some not.. Protected 10440's are a special order of sorts so the protection circuit is added and new heat shrink put around the cell. Printing when they do this varies on the cells. The original 18350's I had were the same way until I yelped about it and now they are printed correctly. I'll do some yelping on the 10440's and see if more info can be printed on the label.. I get the same question all the time about the 14500's but they tell me that they buy those complete already.. 14250's same thing..

Just for reference,....

The 10440 that I had melt down was not from MadVapes.

It came in a 510 usb passthrough purchased from elsewhere.

My spare 10440 is however from MadVapes, (the one that DIDN'T meltdown when put in the mod!)
The replacement for the one that did melt down is also from MadVapes.
Seeing the difference firsthand between MadVapes 10440 batts and someone elses unknown batts made me a believer. I'll be picking up my batts from hoog from now on.

Not too much of a tangent- I hope!
But someone had posted about protected chargers in another thread.
I was/am under the impression "protected chargers" are only really important when NOT using protected batteries. Can someone clarify this more for me?

And because I babble so wel,l let's ask that question again but a different way hahaha Someone NOT an electrician stated that if the battery have protection- the smart chargers are not a BIG benefit when using protected batteries..True or False?

Let's face it any battery protected or not protected can be dangerous lol but there are certainly varying degrees of safety involved.

So my understanding of the batteries first:

Unprotected batteries need a charger that will not allow the battery to over charge and need to be used in a device that will not let the battery over-discharge (like the 905).

Protected Batteries. 2 varieties that I know of.

1) Over charge, over discharge and short circuit protection.. This is the standard.
2) Just over discharge and short circuit protection..

Protection circuit on protected batts is supposed to not allow the voltage to get below 2.8 v..

Unfortunately with chargers I've never seen a dumb li-ion charger although I'm sure they are out there. All the ones I've seen or carry are smart enough that they will not overcharge a battery past 4.2v whether it is protected or not..


I guess this could use a mention here also-- 3.0 volt batteries.

There's a misconception that you need a special charger for say 3 volt CR2 batteries. In a way it's true because most of the charger openings are too big for a CR2 or 14250 for that matter.

The underlying technology of a 3.0 volt litium ion battery is still a li-ion battery that internally is capable of taking a 4.2 volt charge. The only difference is that the output is regulated down to 3.0 volts. (approximately 3.3v on a full charge)

Well that expalins the meltdown. No short circuit protection.

Luckily it was the only one I had that wasn't protected, and its protected replacement is on its way.

And the 10440 in a 510 PT is not protected... made me take a look at mine:) After taking it apart you'll find that there's a pcb inside that is overcharge/overdischarge protection:) Now I know for sure not to use THAT one in a mod! LoL
