I was wondering if it's safe to use a 24 gauge Kanthal Awg A1 wire on a 18650 and how many wraps? I still have to get a Ohms meter.
oops above my pay grade but I am sure someone else will know I have made a few coils with kanthal -was quite proud of myself :) but I use a eleaf 20 Istick and if the coil is too low it won't fire the 50 watt was bought because I had trouble getting the coils to read higher -I finally did get it sort of sorted out -

It's not safe to build if you don't have a way of measuring your build before you put it on a mech mod.

Are you using an authentic Sony VTC3/VTC4/VCT5 30A battery (not bought off Amazon or ebay)?

I try to never exceed 50% of the CDR (continuous discharge rating) of a fully charged battery (4.2v). So with a 30A battery, that would be 15A. This Ohm's Law Calculator tells me that a .28 ohm build is as low as I would want to use.

The reason that I place a 50% limit is because as a battery ages the mAh of the battery degrades, as the mAh degrades so does the batteries c rating (amp limit). So down the road, a 30A battery may only be a 15A battery.

Since you are new to mech mods and rebuildables I highly recommend you spend some time with @Baditude (one of our resident battery/safety experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditude's Blog - Table of Contents: The blogs that address battery safety, Ohm's Law, CDR (continuous discharge rating/Amps) and how they all work together are detailed below:

BATTERIES

Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

Purple Efest Batteries not as Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

Are you wanting to sub ohm or be above 1.0 ohms. Sub ohm is clouding or big plumes of vapor or 1.0 ohms and above good for flavor. I tend to stay twords the sub ohms usually around .3 ohms. I use VTC4's bc i know i can trust them. I use a dual coil 8 wrap 24 awg kanthal a1 around a 1/3 drill bit. It usually hits around my target .3 ohms. To me anything worth doing is worth doing it right the first time so always use an ohm reader or a multi meter. Good luck, oh and check out riptrippers on youtube he has good build tutorials.

I agree with the "warning will robinson" type of messages. Even if you plan a high ohm build, things might not go as you expect. ALWAYS test it with an ohm meter before it touches the top of a mechanical mod... but don't let that deter you though.... Just work with the right gear... one thing a lot of those youtube videos don't show you, is them checking the ohms of the build.
