Yah... well, in my case, the clones I got are nicer than the real deal from the pix, and I scrutinized the pix of the real deals... I'm pretty retentive about materials, I care far less about the name. Some real deals are not very good deals, like the kayfun Lights. You'd think if they spent all that time developing it, SvoMestro would have better quality control. Did you see some of the threads about the original finishes? Units shipped with metal shavings not removed, in broken cardboard boxes... what the heck.

Curse of popularity. You can focus on volume or consistency, not always both. Sometimes it's wiser to choose one over the other. I just got a real one & it's impeccable. I always stress over tiny details & they couldn't have done a better job with mine. Could also be the chance that the couple bad ones out of a very large batch are the only ones being talked about too. They say if you have a good experience with something, on average, you tell 2 or 3 people, but a bad experience you tell 8 or 9. I'm not convinced yet. They're a manufacturing company, not artisans making them 1 at a time.

That's a good point. But I got 5 of the clones, and they are all flawless. You'd think for the money SvoMestro charges for theirs, they'd at least look at them and peel the chunks of extraneous metal off their units before shipping, it takes 5 secs. That's just shameful. Look at the thread about Kayfun Light on the PV forum... heck. Look up my post in your friends list for that thread. The guy who ordered from them got it with a whole chunk of raw waste metal on his!!!

I know the thread, I've got a couple posts in there too. Just playing Devil's Advocate... to an extent. I'm truthfully not convinced that it's not just a roll of the dice. A slight manufacturing flaw that doesn't affect the end user (such as that sliver of extra material that just needs to be picked off) wouldn't justify bad QC in a major manufacturing operation. It could easily be 1 in 10's of thousands.

Went into a B&M today. Someone has the gall to make a Caravela clone. Sickening. Cloned that are good, that's one thing. This one was total crap with the caravela ship terribly scribbled on it. I should have taken a picture...

Wow... that's just WRONG. But can you imagine what materials they had to make it out of to sell it for that price? Recycled lead that's been plated maybe?

I'd be worried it might be radioactive or something.
Claims to be made of Stainless (mystery) steel and Brass (colored metal).

Edit: Here's a picture of a real Caravela:
