I got one of those pre-built coil packs and am using the hive coils (.5 ohm) in a TFv8. Reads out at .3 ohms. Above 45W it starts to taste burned, tried down to 20W. I'm getting decent vapor, but not a lot of flavor. Are these just not good coils to get flavor?

I used hive wire in my tfv8 and my recommendation is dont. Theyre thick and theres a disgusting amount of heat transfer/retention in the tfv8 rba.
I have a roll of hive i had used in the tfv8 and it was useable only in a spaced coil setup, i had much more luck using tiger wire in the v8.

Buy rolls of prefab clapton or tiger wire. Or use regular round wire builds.

On that note the tfv12 rba-t or even the regular rba have greatly increased airflow and you can use thicker wire in them.

Fused clapton was what smok had meant to be used in their decks.

Ive still had a better experience in the v8 and the v12 using regular claptons.

At that point its just getting subjective user to user though. I just prefer the drop in heat transfer to the tank using regular wire i think (chainvaper).

I'm pretty much happy if I can get good flavor and fair vapor production, not to the stage of building my own coils yet, other than simple single wire...but have no wire ATM. Basically just going through the kit that I posted above and trying out the different types, I'll get some wire when I get down to just a couple pairs left. I was not aware that you could buy spools of clapton, might pick some up when I am able to.

Look around online my friend.
You can get spools of almost anything.
Single, fused, triple core clapton.
Tiger, staggerton, twisted, hive, chain the list goes on.

Im a avid builder but im not a wire fabricator.

Youll have to search online for alot of specialty wire done by the roll. UD brand wire ive had alot of luck with but i know theres better.
