agreed. whenever i have the laptop on i have yahoo and google chats up and running (thought i may not talk or am in invisible mode), i have seen a crazy high influx of bot's, spam and trolls rolling into it (even though the settings are you need to have me add you for us to chat), I have seen a incline of false hits (as it were) as i am a seller on kijiji, and used.com

i think the Staff have taken note of this and like aggo said it is a extra level of protection, and if a transaction was to go sour on either end, i am guessing this allows the staff to step in and force the cash (be it to seller or back to buyer) on whatever the ad (or deal) is.

But that's the thing -- what actual "extra' protection does it really provide? I think it's all in our heads, really. People can still easily rip others off if they want to. A jerk is a jerk, verified or not.

Like me

All silliness aside, and if i am wrong here i will admit it....but seeing as the staff are asking you to be verified, if (and i hope it doesn't) deal goes south, could not they (staff) contact pay pal on your behalf and force the seller to refund the money, or a buyer forced to give the money?

Or and again i am not sure, so if i am wrong i am wrong; if the buyer or seller welsh on a classified deal, then with them being varied you could proceed with legalities if you wanted to?

At this point if i am wrong on this, then let me know......as punishment (yeah right) i will steal one of ChellyNelly's jam sandwich's, run off to my super duper secret hiding spot and enjoy it

either way i think it looks cool with the verified part under my name I feel like i can now say "yes, i am who i say i am, and live where i say i live" silly i know ;)

The mods are volunteers, they're not stepping in to lay charges on people who screw someone via a classified ad. And if you wanted to pursue it yourself well then hopefully you paid via Paypal and hopefully they rule in your favour and refund your money to your account. As far as the law goes, I am seriously doubting that if you called the police and told them, they wouldn't care. Maybe I'm just a giant pessimist? I dunno.

Now steal my jam sammich, I dare ya!!! :D

I think ECF is quite different from eBay, though. ECF is a fairly small (but growing) community, and I think the admins just want to try their best to protect the members as well as their own reputation. I don't know to what extent they'd go to prosecute offenders, but I understand their concerns. Personally I don't find their measures overly invasive, and I'd like to continue getting good deals through this site.
