Agree with DJ. The whole question lies with the inhilation of flavorings meant to be injested. The argument that they have been deemed perfectly safe for injestion has nothing to do with the safety profile when they are inhaled. It's perfectly safe to have someone dump a gallon of water on your head from a six foot ladder. Freeze that water and it's likely to eff you up if dropped on your head.
The other significant questions have to do with the amounts of VG/PG that we're exposing ourselves to and what happens to the 4 components found in juice when transformed from liquid to vapor through a heating process.
But these studies are not designed to rule out any level of harm from vaping. They only need to prove that vaping is magnatudes safer than smoking. And that, at least anectdotally, has already been proven daily through clinical presentation of health. Easier breathing, no more coughing, etc are all reported and can't be argued.
