This is probably NOT a seizure and you probably did not overdose on nicotine. More likely than not you experienced a vasovagal episode/syncope. Coughing can cause this and I see it all the time as a paramedic. I am by no means discounting the situation but asking an e-cig forum for medical advice probably isn't going to be in your best interests. Most of the answers I have read are probably going to cause you more psychological harm than good. Now, if you have an underlying seizure or cardiac history then that's a different story. Long story short, take smaller drags.

I am in no way saying don't go to the dr. You need to see your dr asap. But as an emergency room nurse I can say what physically happens when you cough or do anything that strains too hard. There is a nerve that runs behind the carotid artery in the neck, called the vagus nerve. When you cough or hold your breath and 'bear down' it stimulates that nerve and will slow your pulse and drop your blood pressure and can cause you to faint.

Again as a nurse I am in NO WAY WHATSOEVER saying do not go to the dr because you need to. there are several different reasons for this and you need an MD to check them out and see what caused this. I am just passing on the information on why coughing can cause fainting.

Ok, so I've been vaping for the past 2 days (no analogs at all). I took an unusually large drag (well large for me). I started coughing... the next thing I know I wake up on the floor disoriented wondering where the hell I am... luckily I was sitting on the couch at the time and didn't fall far.
I have been vaping fairly steadily all day using 18mg juice (I smoked 1.5-2+ packs a day prior to the other day when I got my 510). Maybe I am using too much? I don't have any headaches or nausea... felt normal actually.
Anyone else have any issues like this?

I've heard of this happening but it is very rare. It's called a Vape-O-Gasm so consider yourself informed and very very lucky as very few of us ever have the pleasure of experiencing this.

*Disclaimer: If this really did happen then go see a doctor because chances are it had nothing to do with the vapor or its contents so you need find out what the lleh is wrong with you.

you pass out because your brain is not getting enough blood, when you fall you increase blood flow to the brain - when you cough blood flow is directed to the chest, dropping flow to the brain

oh but by all means go to the doctor, perhaps he can prescribe some anti-anxiety meds for your hypochondria

My Dad used to pass out like that from coughing real hard. The doctor told him it was from coughing out a lot of oxygen and causing him to black out. He would continually cough out without breathing in to get more air. See your doctor, and if it happens again, try to get in a breath or two during the coughing.

Yeah that's what it was like... I was continually coughing and not taking in any air. I have never in my life had a sezure so I'm pretty sure it wasn't that. Whan I came to it felt like I had played that game where you squat down and take really deep breaths, stand up really quick, and have someone squeeze you til you pass out.
I just know not to try to take a huge drag off this sucker

know what most people say that have their first seizure??

yeah...that's correct. "well i've never had a seizure before in my life."

not suggesting that's what it was...just that you shouldn't discount something just because it's never happened to you. there's always a first time.

i think your best bet is to go see a doc. I highly doubt its anything serous. Maybe wait a few days to see if anything happens again. I would suggest to lower your nic level though. maybe drop down to 11mg for a while. I think personally you had a huge oxygen intake which will cause blackouts. Its happened to me before. That was years ago though.

This is actually somewhat common in smokers. My friend wasn't near as lucky as you to be sitting on the couch when it happened. He was standing in the kitchen and when he fell, ended up cracking his nose open by hitting the counter. His wife went into the kitchen to find him in a pool of blood and called 911 and thought he was dead. The good thing is that it was enough to make him stop smoking after a 40+ year habit; cold turkey. I would still get yourself checked out by a doctor because you could have a blood pressure problem also.

I went to the Dr. this morning just to be on the safe side. He said the same thing about coughing hard and passing out as some of you did here. My bp is normal, and the Dr. while not overjoyed about the e-cig seemed to think it is a much safer than smoking cigarettes.

I'm sorry to hear about your ....../.... addiction. Good luck kicking that habit :D
