If any part of your wire heats up that isn't touching wick/juice, you'll get a pretty nasty and harsh metallic flavor, it's not pleasant. If you're seeing this with silica, it usually means you're firing it for too long OR there's not enough resistance in your coil compared to your legs. What resistance are you running?
I heat it up with short pulses, and then run a drill bit or the screwdriver I used to wrap the coil thru it back and forth. Test fire success. You also need to make sure the legs are not all bent out of shape and smooth and short as possible but still get your position.
currently running the coil around 2.2ohms and the legs aren't glowing like the center by any means but the legs are glowing a little keep in mind this is when i dry burn it, whenever i have the wick/juice on there is no glowing.

Sounds good to me. "Hot legs" are more of an issue with mesh wicks, where the coil is shorting and only a portion of it heats up causing the leg to glow.

Someone else here suggested doing this...
There must be a "scientific" reason why.....but all I know is....IT WORKS!!
Unless you've got gams like Tina Turner or Betty Grable....."hot legs" AREN'T a good thing!!!
Happy (vaping) Trails!
