Moving to stem a vaping epidemic among young people, On Friday, February 28th, the United States House of Representatives voted to pass House Resolution 2339, also known as the “Protecting American Lungs and Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act of 2020”. The bill bans the sale of flavored vapor and tobacco products, including menthol and vape juice for open-system devices.

This bill has caused strong controversy in society

Supporters said the legislation provides a comprehensive strategy to reverse a teen vaping epidemic that officials fear is hooking a generation of young people on nicotine. In the latest government survey, more than 1 in 4 high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the previous month. Late last year, Congress approved a law raising the minimum age to buy all tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21 nationwide.

Opponents said the House bill went too far, noting that the new law raising the age of tobacco use has been in effect for only two months. A group of renowned public health scholars joined together to speak out against blanket bans on vaping and highlight the promises and potential it may provide adult smokers. In a piece published in the journal Science, they note that there is currently no evidence that vaping is harmful, and that prohibitive policy will only turn former smokers back towards tobacco or even the black market.

There is no doubt that this will cause a huge blow to the electronic cigarette industry if this bill is passed. What kind of impact will this have on the e-cigarette industry and e-cigarette users? What do you think?
