batteries get gunked up after a while and I was just wondering how everyone cleaned theirs. My personal method is very simple. Rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush. I've never had any problems with this method and it seems to work quite well. The alcohol evaporates very quickly and I'm usually able to use the battery within several minutes. (But I try to let them dry for about half an hour.)

I have been using V4L for close to 1.5 yrs now. About 9 months ago I decided I couldn't handle pulling out all the stuff to clean my batts. So I decided to clean them under hot running water and used a toothbrush to clean them. I DO NOT put the whole batt under water only the end. I never ever let water touch or go past the button. When done washing I shake them several times to get any water out. If they need to be charged I set the batt in a glass, upside down for several hours to make sure they are dry before plugging them into the charger. I have used them right after washing with no problem at all. I have never lost a batt to cleaning using this method. I normally wash them once a week.

I would never think of using this method on an auto batt and DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE use this method on an auto batt... Your batt will be dead right after using the water...

I spray them out every few days with a PC air duster can, then every month or two with alcohol as Snow does. I use manuals almost exclusively, but also lightly blow out my autos although this is probably not recommended (depends on the type of switch in the auto). Making sure you don't have excess juice at the battery end of the carto after refilling is a good way to prevent buildup in the battery itself as well.

How often should you clean them??

i clean the batteries every day. why wait for goo to build up? it's just a wipe down with a folded up paper towel that i dampened with alcohol and takes all of 30 seconds. but i have a real pet peeve about juices on the exterior of stuff. i don't want cross contamination of flavors so to speak, or sticky finger prints getting on my PCC, on the outside of my cartos or batts, etc. i keep my stuff sanitized!
