It's really down to experience. After a while you'll know when to refill. But I do find that the flavour and vapour drop right off just before the tank runs dry. I agree though, burnt cotton is not a good taste

i agree with this, most of the time you get a 1-3 puff window that the vapor drops, heat is up and you get this warm almost burnt airyness to it, thats when you knew the fluid is low, but if you miss it.
You can always try the dipstick method if there is a bottom fill port or if you can unscrew the top piece. Get a longer syringe or toothpick (something narrow) and wipe it off first then put it down in there until it touches the bottom and pull it out and see how far up on the utensil the liquid goes up to. Of course if it is bottom fill hole then you should turn it upside down but that's just common sense. It's the same way you check for oil in your car!
