LOL, Pretty far. A few months ago I stepped outside to hear a dune buggy way off in the distance, maybe a mile and half, maybe two. I could smell that he, as most VW powered dune buggies do, was running very rich on the petrol.

The smell of the desert has never in my life been so sweet. I used to listen to people talk about the smell of the desert,
NOW I know what they are talking about. Its sweet, and spicy.

I can smell that it's about to be spring time; it smells like that great after the rain smell, only all the time. I was out in my backyard the other night working in my workshop, and I could smell when my neighbor two houses down fired up his grill. I can't wait for the wisteria all over town to start blooming, because I've never lived anywhere that it grew except when I was still smoking, and if the fantastic smell that made it into my smoker nose is any indication I am anticipating that blooming wisteria smell as a vaper after almost 5 months without cigarettes will be pretty amazing.

However, I spent today helping round up and do yearly vaccinations on 75 dogs at my local no-kill shelter, which is also surrounded by 100 acres of horse pasture. So today, the answer to your question is TOO FAR. :)

My wife can smell smokers from cars with all the windows closed, that are leaving shopping malls she frequents.

I'm thinking of renting her out to local airports to give the hounds a rest.

When I first quit smoking it was the most noticeable difference. Sure it was great to smell porterhouse steaks or Ravacotti. Always a nice smell when someone is frying chicken. But I also found out my smoking hid some rather nasty smells too. Until I started vaping, I had no idea the amount of flatulence the cat that has slept by my face for 16 years has. Garbage has to be taken out more often. Smokers absolutely stink. Women's cologne's appear to be stronger. And yes, I can smell the couple across the street when they light up in their driveway. Sure wish vaping had given me other "super powers".

Which in all honesty. . . it has.

Since quitting smoking I find that I can smell things from really far away. Anybody else suddenly have a super-sniffer? I can catch a cigarette across 6 lanes of traffic and a residential grill from 1/4 mile away. Since my whole family and almost all of my friends smoke, they think I'm imagining things.

I already had a super-sniffer before I quit smoking -- I could smell a whole lot of things that no one else could -- like the plastic nose-pieces on eyeglasses; some of them smell like bug spray. My husband says now I can smell a gnat fart. From 3 doors down. :D

And I always hated the smell of road tar, when they're putting down the blacktop. Now, I'll drive 10 miles out of the way to avoid it -- it's got to be an olfactory preview of hell.
