There’s nothing in the vaping world quite like a fresh coil. Vape juice tastes better, your clouds seem puffier, and the world is yours for the taking! Right up until you take a deep hit and wind up with a earth-shattering dry hit or a nasty flavor that you can’t seem to rid your taste buds of. How did this happen? It seems like only yesterday your e-liquid was delightful and delicious. The likely culprit is your coil....

Coils are so tricky to use, especially if you buy them pre-made. Some coils can last up to a month (or longer!) while other coils go kaput after only a few days (but this is usually a rare occurrence). While most coils usually last around two weeks, there are some tips and tricks you can use to increase the longevity of your coils. Let’s go over a few of them now!

DON’T CHAIN VAPE
One of the most difficult things to stop yourself from doing as a vaper is chain vaping. Chain vaping is what happens when you take rapid hits of the same flavor without giving the coil a chance to cool down. Sometimes you get a flavor that’s so delicious you can’t help but want to vape it constantly.

However, if you don’t give the coil enough time to cool down, the coil gets too hot and the cotton won’t be able to absorb any of the vape juice. Veteran vapers know (and may have experienced) any hit you take can result in a harsh dry hit that will burn your throat and have you coughing uncontrollably. Worse yet, you could burn the cotton by vaping too frequently. Once the cotton gets burnt, it will turn black and all the vape juice that gets absorbed by the cotton will carry that burnt taste.

The best way to keep yourself from chain vaping is wait a few moments before you take your next hit, about 3-5 seconds. This allows the coil to cool down and soak up more of your favorite ejuice. Once those few seconds have passed, you can enjoy your sweetly flavored clouds once again, without fear of ruining your coil!

CLEAN YOUR TANK

You may not realize this, but your tank can build up residue that can prevent your device from firing at its top performance. If you happen to be in high traffic areas like a construction site, windy beaches, or a dusty warehouse, your tank will mostly likely have dirt built up around the airflow slots, around the base of the tank, and inside the tank’s chimney. In addition to the normal buildup of dirt, your e-liquid can actually be a reason your tank will need a good cleaning. Once e-liquids vaporize, they often leave behind traces of filmy residue. This residue can slowly build up to clog your coils, making it very difficult for the new e-liquid to vaporize. So be sure to sanitize your Vape! Start out by boiling some water or using extremely hot water from your faucet. Once the water is hot enough, disassemble your tank (leave the coil aside) and carefully drop the tank into the water. Leave the tank to soak in the hot water for at least half an hour, then slowly drain the water and reassemble your tank. There are ways to clean your coil, but they don’t really extend the life of the coil for more than a few days.

MAKE SURE YOUR TANK ALWAYS HAS E-LIQUID IN IT
Depending on the size of your tank, you might run out of e-liquid before you realize it. If you see your ejuice levels reaching about a quarter tank, it’s probably a good time to fill up. It’s very tempting to want to vape the last possible drop of ejuice, especially when you’re ready to change flavors. Don’t do it. If you want to change flavors without mixing the vape juices, you can rinse out the tank (sans the coil) and once your tank is dry, you can add new vape juice to it. A dry hit is probably the least pleasant experience of vaping, but it’s very easy to avoid. As long as you have juice in your tank and don’t chain vape, you should rarely experience this bane of vaper’s existence.

PRIME YOUR COIL PROPERLY
It’s very tempting to toss out your old coil and immediately start using the new coil on the same wattage. Who wants to wait for delicious flavor? But failure to properly prep the coil can result in a shortened coil lifespan. Prepping a coil is simply and takes a few minutes. Start out by getting rid of your old coil. Next, take your new coil and screw it into the base of your tank. Dab some of the e-liquid into the wicking ports on the side of the coil as well as on the top of the coils (these should look like little circles). Screw the base and the coil to the top of the tank and fill up with e-liquid. Leave the tank standing upright for a few minutes to allow the ejuice to soak into the coils. Start out at a lower wattage, about half of what you would normally vape at (i.e. if you normally vape at 120W, start off at 60W) and take your first few puffs. Gradually increase your wattage by about 7-10W after your first few puffs until you reach your desired level. And that’s it! Priming the coil takes a few minutes but it can extend the longevity of your coil by days or even weeks!

FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDED WATTAGES ON THE COIL
There’s no perfect wattage to vape at, no matter which device you’re using. If you have your wattage set too low, you can burn the coil by underpowering it and overusing it. If your wattage is set too high, the juice will burn faster than the coils can absorb it. When in doubt, check the recommended wattage of the coil. Each coil comes with the recommended wattage engraved directly into its side wall. Some coils even have a “Best Vape At” wattage number, making it simple to know how high to fire your device at. Again, this isn’t the number you’re required to vape at; as long as you stay within the recommended range, your coil should last you for at least two weeks, and quite possibly longer!

CONCLUSION
Hopefully this has answered some questions about how long your coil is supposed to last you. Obviously the coil life depends on how often you vape (every day or just occasionally), how high your wattage is set to (low wattages typically last longer), and what type of vape juice you use (sweet flavors like custards and other desserts are usually thicker). However, these are some tips and tricks to help your coil last as long as possible.

Do you have any other tips for vapers looking to increase the lifespan of their coils? Let us know whats working for you.. Happy vaping and keep those flavorful and delightful clouds blowing!
