I've been thinking for awhile about a novelty PCC with a hand-crank. Either hand-crank PCC or a hand-crank powered PV... Seems like in the winter, there's always someone with not enough charged batteries. Need emergency vaping services. EVS. :)

You mean like one of those hand crank flashlights?

Yup. Very similar. But not the shake flashlights (the inductive coil just can't generate the current)

A good number of years back I did a contract design for a company of an emergency radio. Could be powered off of just about anything. Adapters for half a dozen different batteries, had a little solar panel, a hand-crank on the side, world-wide AC adapter, car adapter, etc.

We didn't have ultracapacitors back then like we do now. They'd make a world of difference.

Can't imagine that a "mod" like that would be anything but a "what a weird novelty!" item, but still sounds amusing.

Well I know that I'd like to have one. I don't trust the US electrical grid much anymore and the security of an item like this would be great - just in case.

You could always grab one of the solar chargers they make for portable electronics. I know a few have USB ports for charging cell phones and such. If you don't have time or sun, just charge it in the car with the cig lighter attachment :)

I just got my replacement PCC and I think I'm having the same problem. It only took 10-15 minutes till the light turned green on the PCC but I don't think energy is being transered to the battery. I must be cursed. I REALLY wanted one of these :( I give up.

Where could I find one of those solar powered chargers with a USB port, PC Clone?

I can whole-heartedly recommend these: Amazon.com: Sunpak Sc-2800 Solar/USB NiMH 2800 mAh Battery Charger: Electronics

I haven't tried running a PT from it, but paired with a couple USB charger, they'll simultaneously charge two V4L batteries. I leave it on the dashboard of the car in the driveway to keep it charged. If I need to charge V4L batteries in the field, I just plug the chargers into it, a couple hours later, I have batteries. Then I toss it back on the dash again to top off its battery.

In theory, it should be able to charge V4L batteries 9-12 times on a single full solar charge (which takes basically all day to recover).
