How many people actually saved money compared to buying cigarettes?

You do need to control the 'new shiny things' impulse, and yes, the initial costs for a set of atomizers, batteries, tanks, e-liquid etc can be quite high.

However, I've done my initial spend now (some $350) and will break even after two months. I've already got enough juice to last
me three months and if my order from NicVape manages to make it past customs then I should be set up for the next six months
without needing further investment.

YMMV of course! ;-)

I went into this with the plan to spend exactly what I did on analogs for the first year. This allowed me to experiment with different batteries, mods, cartos, juice, DIY supplies, etc. and not feel guilty. It also has the side benefit of being able to go into the second year pretty much knowing on what I want from here on out. Oh, and I've now got a supply of batteries, 3 big battery mods, about an 8 year supply of cartomizers, and a nice stash of DIY equipment whereas I would have had nothing at all if I had spent the past year's money on smoking.

Next year (and for the next few years) I will only need to spend about $100 per year for PG, VG, and flavors to DIY. Oh and maybe a big battery or two for my mods (another $25).

I have.

Start-up can be expensive overall, but DIY juice @ 12.5 cents/mil knocks that down in a hurry. If you can settle on a set-up, and get quality parts (mod, batts, atties, &c.), then, after your initial sojourn to see what you like, it doesn't cost all that much for upkeep.

Breathing freely is the best, though... Can't really put a price-tag on that one. And not dying early of some smoker's disease...

Typically the return on investment is about 2 weeks if you stick with your initial ecig and liquid. My wife and I were spending about $380/month (and yes, we only smoke about 1 pack/day each). I ordered more eliquid so our break even will be @ 3 weeks. After that, it's about $60/month for the two of us (liquid and replacement carts or atomizers).

Highly recommend the e-go 1000mah passthru battery, type b tanks with the silicone caps (not the hard plastic ones) also the smoktech dual coil carts are very good and cheap.

I try not to think about how much money I've spent on e-cigs... Especially if I factor in that I've subsidized kits for some of my friends too :) But, I've finally found a setup I really like (eGo + Type B tanks) and found a clearance sale on OEM tanks/atties for a song and a dance so I'm stocking up...
After that, I just need to find juice that I really like, which I haven't yet...
I would smoke about a carton a week at about $55, which is about $220/mo or so... I think I'm about that if not a little over in my first month, but after this month I'll definitely be saving money...
Unless I decide to try DIY, which I'm really tempted to do, then it'll probably be after November that I start saving :)

Great topic. Saving money was definitely one reason I took up the PV, but lots of trial and error has cost me in these first 2 weeks. If I had done more research, and not thrown good money after bad, I would be in better shape. I started out buying 2 NPRO kits and a 3 sets of refill cartos. Of course, this was garbage, so I tried to salvage the purchase by buying off-brand cartomizers (RN4081) and 30ML Johnson Creek juice. The off-brand cartomizers were OK, but I didn't like the juice. I just couldn't get around the 4-second limit on the draw from the NPRO. So, I bit the bullet and invested in an eGo kit, which I love, but have now had to order 510 LR cartos, new juice, etc.

Got an adapter for all those RN4081 cartos to fit my eGo, and have found a juice I like and stockpiled a lot (and am enjoying the Johnson Creek more now). Dropped $15 on a case to bring my total investment to about $275 in first 2 weeks, which is about what I'd spend in a month on analogs. I'm sitting on a full eGo kit, about 50ML of juice, and 15 new cartos. Apart from a drip-tip, I think I've spend all I need for another month or so. After than, I'm planning $30-50 a month on juice and cartos. That is big-time savings for me over analogs. Am considering getting a second eGo starter kit as it seems like the best deal to get 2 batts, 2 attys, second charger, etc.

It took me 6 months to start saving. DIY is very expensive to start. I now have enough hardware and flavors to last at least 2 years. Vapeing is pretty cheap since I no longer use nicotine and am 100% VG.

Cigarette habit $1825.00 per yr.
vapeing habit $ 99.52 per yr (hardware+ juice)

So yes you can save money. (I use a 900mah batt + XL atty & XL carts, I vape 1-1.5ml per day)

To date, I have spent way over what I would have spent smoking. But I have over a year's supply of juice, cartomizers to last me almost a year and my favorite mod. I have intentions of selling off the batteries and mods I do not use much so that will help me recoup some of the money I have spent. It is very hard for me to not buy anything. The classifieds are the toughest. However I want my credit cards paid off so I am finally exercising some control on my spending.

Yes.. I spent a lot in the beginning. I tried the blue, then went to the 510 reg carts. I got a mega battery then upgraded to the 510 tank carts and ego t batteries. I also spent lots on juice trying to get the mg right.

Now that I have found these tank carts and have almost zeroed in on the mg of juice strenght I'm really happy! I should be spending $40 on juice and probably need to buy an atimizer once a month. I keep three working ones at a time. They need weekly or more cleaning so I try to do two and have one going. So about $50 a month. I spent $180 on reg. cigs. Big savings!

I spent some bucks on pcc's which are ok, and I like having incase my egos are both done by accident.

I'm only about 4 weeks in. I'm spending way more, but I feel like this happens at the beginning. I promised myself no purchases for two weeks (with my fingers crossed behind my back).

I've come to accept it for now. I think it will calm down. If it doesn't I still feel fine about it, for several reasons:

1) I'm in my late 20s, single, with a decent-paying job, and I have disposable income. I know this is not the case for everyone, but if I didn't spend it on this, I'd find something else - music, speakers, video games, liquor.
2) I'm spending to improve my health. That's OK.
3) Instead of putting money into the pockets of BT, I'm buying from mostly small retailers. I feel good about this - without exception the vendors I have found on this forum seem to be small shops with great customer service. It's not philanthropy, but as long as I'm getting the products I want at prices that work for me, I enjoy supporting these vendors. I hope they are successful and want them to make money. I think it's good for the PV world, the economy and the world at large. Call me naive if you will.
