I'm shocked how cheap cigarettes are in America!

Here in the Land Down Under, a pack of 20's normally runs around the $15-$18 mark, a pack of 25's around the $20-$25 mark
I was a roll-your-own smoker and a 50g pouch (say around 2oz) was $50

they dont grow tobacco in your country? or is it taxed that seriously??

So, did everybody who read this thread notice the price differential? The cost for a pack of cigarettes is less than 2 bucks US. Everything over is taxes. Now think about it, Shawne says its $10.50 a pack in NY, That means that for every pack you DON"T buy, NY loses over $8. This is why the politicians are trying to ban vaping. Vaping is costing the state millions of dollars a day, and that is the only thing the government cares about.

They would prefer if you smoke like a chimney, pay tons of taxes and die long before able to collect any kind of pension. Smokers make them money while alive and in the end save them a load of money. Governments like smokers because they dump loads of money into the government coffers, usually die about the time they are becoming less productive and don't create a huge burden on the healthcare or pension system in their old age.

No idea how much NOW, but back in February, Virginia Slims were $5.51/pk at Walgreens, which was the cheapest I could find them anywhere. A carton in most places was about $56-some odd, but I stopped buying cartons when they went over $50, on general principles and sheer outrage. I think a part of me was hearkening back to a doctor's advice years back, who suggested making it as difficult for myself to smoke as I could. 2 pks at a time was the most difficult I could deal with, since I usually smoked anywhere from 15-25 a day.
