I have been using the same coil for over a month. After every 2nd tank I rinse it with a syringe, dry burn, scrape the coil clean of the burnt liquid with a dental pick, rinse again and then dry burn the water out of the wick. It's like a brand new coil every time. I have been using the same wick for like 2 months and it's like new also. Does anyone else have a routine like this or do most of you rebuild when it gets gunked up? And how often do you build a new wick?

I replace my cartos when they stop working or taste nasty. They're too cheap for me to justify cleaning something that costs like, 1.50$ a month.

I'm pretty new and don't have the terminology down yet, but I use an ego with a Pyrex Aro tank. As I understand it, the bottom part of the tank contains the atomizer and a coil. They told me at the vape shop that I would need to replace the coil every so often, so I got a pack of 5, but they cost $2 each, so $10. That seems pricey to me. I don't know how often I will need to replace the coils.

When you say "cartos", would that work with my set up and be cheaper to replace?

It depends on what I am using and what juice ratio I am using with it. My igo w can last up to 2 weeks if I am dripping 100% vg in it and I drip just the right amount.
Vivi nova heads last me about a month
I gave up on kanger- never again.
Anything mesh that I have will last me upwards of 3 - 3 1/2 months if I am careful with them. The life of a coil/anything really is all dependent on how well they are kept. If you treat them like they are 3 dollars you will get 3 dollars out of them..regardless of the price you spent.

I can't say for a bottom coil since I have a top coil but I know that I had to change cartos every week and 5 of those are $9 so close to the same cost. The thing is to me it was more of a pain to keep filling to cartos. I prefer the fill it and forget it method of the tanks. I have heard on some of the reviews that the bottom coil heads can last longer than the top coil and my top coil usually get about 2 weeks. They cost me $3.99 for 5 @ vapingme. I don't think he has the Aro heads but he has great prices on lots of clearomizer heads.

Thank you for the info and for the shop name. I'll check it out. I'm still so new, I don't want to order the wrong thing and have it not work!

The Aro looks very similar to the EVODs and such, which I have, and seem to last pretty long with a little care. It all depends on the type of juice you're using, how "clean" it is. There are some out there, like tobaccos, that might have some particulates in it that will kill the coil. Also, there are some sweeter juices that do the same. Personally, I've never had any problems, but my experience is rather limited.

What do I do to make my heads last longer? When I change flavors, I pull the old head out, rinse it with hot water, then sit it in a shot glass full of water to soak overnight. Some use everclear, vodka, etc, so what you use is really up to you. I find water works the best for me though.... Right now I've got about 8 heads, all of them are used. 2 are in current setups, 2 need to be soaked but I'm lazy, and 4 have been cleaned. The last time I've bought heads was probably 6+ weeks ago, the oldest ones are probably 3+ months old. When they get a funky monkey .... taste, they get tossed.

As far as cartos and carto tanks, I've just started down that road, and they're awesome. I can chainvape without any dry hits. Cartos can be cheaper in the long-run if you buy in bulk, I think I've seen them for less than a dollar per carto, but you're buying 50 at a time. But doing that, you're set for quite a while!!

a carto is shorthand for cartomizer, which is a metal tube that contains a long coil surrounded by polyfill. What you have is a clearomizer, your tank wicks with silica strings at the bottom of your tank. They are two separate entities and arguably just as good as each other. Clearos are much more "plug and play" no hassle setting up, but the require cleaning for optimal use. Cartos are more complicated to set up, you have to prime them and if you don't have them in a tank (which you should) they require "topping off" so they don't dry out. But if they're in a tank, the set up is worth it because then they'll last anywhere from 2 - 4 weeks in my experience just by refilling the tank. It's not particularly more expensive one way or the other, it's all preference.

Thank you, I am learning more by the minute.:)

I think the gal at the vape shop who helped me with my first set up wanted to keep it simple for me, now that I understand the Clearos are easier to use. I've been very happy for the couple of weeks I've been doing this, and have had no problems whatsoever. Most importantly, I have not smoked a cigarette since I began!

Good for you! And simple is good for beginners as with anything, but as you spend more time on here you may be compelled to try new types of tanks, variable voltage batteries or some more expensive/complicated upgrades. I know I was.

Glad to see a fellow Okie. I grew up in Grady County about an hour from you. I can't tell you much about bottom coil except some seem to love it. I will tell you that I use the Kanger T2 because they are cheap to buy and the heads are so cheap. I will tell you that when you fill a top coil the first time you need to let it sit on its side for at least 5 to 10 minutes to wick it all up nice. If you ever get a harsh hit just tip it to the side for a couple of seconds and that will rewick it. Also the kind of juice you use matters. The higher the VG the longer in between puffs to rewick. So if you use 50/50 juice it will take a minute or so. I use 70 pg/ 30 VG and have no problems. If your tank isn't glass then some juices can crack the tank. There is a list of them on the forum. I had that problem with a stardust when my mom ignored my warning and put the worst possible juice for cracking (atomic fireball) in it. Honestly right now if you have the funds I would say try both top and bottom coil and see which you like. They are fairly cheap and trust me it is always good to have at minimum 2 clearomizers on hand. Nothing worse than one konking out on you when you know you have to wait a few days to get another one.
