Only clean it if you can't stand the taste or it refuses to draw. That would be my advice. Even then it woudn't be my first choice. If the draw is super hard it's most likely that the holes are plugged, that can be taken care of with a pin or needle(just clean out the little holes on the atty, that is were the air comes in). If you use the needle on the hole by the threads dont push it in very far. You can hit the coil and break it. If the taste has just gotten nasty you can try a dry burn and then drip on the atty to get it re-primed.

Here's what I do:

Any time the vapor production suffers, tastes get blended from multiple juices, or the draw becomes too stiff:

1. Blow through the battery end - hold a paper towel lightly over the end of the atty to collect juice that gets stuck in the coil
2. Blow until you get no juice out
3. Resume

If that doesn't do the trick, you'll need to dry-burn. PM me and I can walk you through it, having just learned the tricks myself!

1) How often should I clean the atty?
I echo others who have already said to only clean it when needed.

a) When the vapor output has dropped below acceptable levels
b) When a burnt taste, or the taste of something you want out isn't coming out

2) What's the best way to go for as long as possible without needing to add juice?
The ZFM mod is the ultimate for flavor and length of time using a cartridge.
But using the blue foam, or many of the other cartridge mods will help a ton.

A badly clogged atty can be cleaned by soaking in DIET-soda for a couple of hours. Then rinse in warm water and clean as others have mentioned.

When I was in the cart madness world, the best mod for taste was "Stainless Steel" steel wool.

I tried cartos a while back and have never been happier.
