I've noticed a lot of you are having trouble obtaining PG. For those of us who don't live near a tractor supply store or a feed warehouse, there's a ready supply at the pharmacy. The problem usually lies in convincing the pharmacist that you're not going to use it to cook up some drugs. I made my rounds to all the pharmacies in the area, and here's what I discovered:

Tell them it's for a fog machine, and they'll give it to you.

I tried K-Mart, 2 Wal-marts, 2 CVS, Rite Aid, and 2 mom-and-pop pharmacies. Every single one of them asked me what I needed the PG for. At one of the Wal-marts and one of the CVS stores explained what I was actually using it for and they refused to sell it to me without a prescription.

At all of the other stores, I told them it was for a fog machine. I explained that it was cheaper per-gallon to mix my own fog juice than buy it retail. I also told them I add a higher ratio of PG to water to produce thicker fog. When they asked me what the fog machine was for, I told them it was for a stage production at one of the local theatres. Every one of them told me they didn't have it in-stock, but they'd gladly order as many pints as I want for pickup the next day. I declined at all but one store, K-Mart, because they were the closest to my house and had the second lowest price. $9.09 for a pint - Wal-mart was the lowest at $8.78 for a pint.

Hope this helps you guys and girls who are getting brickwalled at your local pharmacy.

I think you guys are just getting too complicated.

I asked for it at my pharmacy. They told me they couldn't sell me the stuff they had. I asked if they could order a bottle for me, they said sure.

Picked it up.

Nobody asked what I needed it for or anything.

Perhaps you look too suspicious? Maybe it helped because I was in a suit after getting out of an interview?

There's my tip: don't LOOK like someone who is going to go make drugs with it. :D

It's perfectly legal.

The answer to the question, "Can you sell me some USP PG", should be "How much do you need, and can you wait a day or two?" An alternate acceptable answer is, "Why?", people are curious after all. Whatever reason you give for "Why?", the next question should be, "How much do you need, and can you wait a day or two?"

As has been previously suggested, the recommended answer to "Why?", should be, "We're having a little party, and KY is crazy expensive by the gallon".

Tell them you mix your own hand lotion, that you seem to be allergic to most of the commercial stuff. Most pharmicists should already be aware of the anti-bacterial properties of PG, and if not, you could mention it to them.

I do the same thing:) When I went to walmart and told them what it was for they refused to sell it:( Couple days later, different pharmacist, told him making lotion, voila! Next day picked up:)
Why won't they just sell it without the questions? Is it used to make something illegal?

I was just wondering the same thing. Any pharmacists out there who can explain this?

Your mom said not to say...
I tell them exactly what I am using it for and even showed them my E-Cig. I had no problem ordering it from Walgreens and picked it up the next day. At first they thought I wanted the powder form and I told them no I need the liquid form like you use for mixing compounds. No problem, it's not restricted and any pharmacist that says it is is full of it and making up rules as they go.

In many areas, pharmacists are protected to ask for the purpose of any product they sell, and refuse if it seems the least bit suspicious (because almost anything in the place can be used in the production of one drug or another these days).

I'd reply using one of the above stock responses that it's for skin care, car wax or such.

I'm an insulin dependant diabetic... My CVS Pharmicist knows me REAL WELL! I asked for a bottle of PG and he asked why I wanted it...

I just said, "It's a good base for hypoallergenic lotions."

He told me he would have it for me the next day, and sure enough on my way home I stopped at the drive through and my pint bottle of Pharmacudical grade Propylene Glycol, USP was waiting for me! :D

Here in england they sell you anything if you pay for it. If a pharmacy at C4 they would probably not ask what its for haha

Yeah, you gotta love it!
When we visited out daughter in London, I was able to buy an 8 oz bottle of pure codine just by walking into the local chemist's and asking for it!

Here in the US, You'ld have to be a licensed pharmisist to get that much codine! 8-o
