How 'unsafe' can an E-cig possibly be?

I'm vaping 0mg - just for flavor only. Based on my limited research of PG and VG, I'd say I'm on the pretty safe side of what I am inhaling. Probably safer than walking around NYC and breathing.
I think I am safe in saying that nicotine is the only ingredient in electronic cigarettes that poses no unknown concerns.

If I were to rank things in the order of unknown concerns it would be...
--Flavorings
--Sweeteners
--Vegetable Glycerin
--Propylene Glycol

Nicotine doesn't even make the list, because there are no unknown concerns.

care of a pv is a concern to me,its tiny in the scope of health but may be over looked. The reason I bring it up is when first trying vaping in hot humid Florida , got handed a pv and used it for a few days and it gave me a bad side effect.Learned after the fact is was left outside in the heat for 6 months and gave me great joy without me looking into the sanitary or good practice issue. On that personal experience it hit hard to not treat a pv as a cig that has been left in a shed for months and then put it in your body.I was wanton and loved it and never thought how crazy it was to not consider what I was doing,100% my fault.Just do not want anyothers to blame the unsanitary for a real issue.

The main problem I have with people who claim it's "completely unsafe" or even "just as bad as cigarettes" is that there are few to no empirical studies based off current vaping methods. Every time I see an "unsafe" rant, it's about marketing to kids (the kid card), nicotine (the unregulated and varying degrees within puffs) and old substances used (the DG debate). I've seen NO studies about inhaling a PG or VG without nicotine in it, and the kid card...well just browse the forums for .10 seconds and see what people have to say about the kid card.

I also think there are too few studies on the health benefits of nicotine when it isn't delivered in cigarette smoke. Even the old cigarette health studies often interchange the terms "cigarette smoke" and "nicotine". It all needs to be started over from scratch now. I believe in the good health effects of nicotine in vapor form. Which leads once again to the "kid card". If I had a kid, I wouldn't care if he vaped, if he took a job and could afford the habit. I don't think it's any more harmful than coffee/caffeine. That said, I do not believe that ecigarettes are marketed to children any more than candy flavored liquors are marketed to children. To me, at the bottom line, nothing should be marketed to children. Some EU countries ban advertising that targets children.

I had a chat with a friend of the family who is an NHS commissioner regarding this. He had been involved in the NHS studies they are carrying out and he said the main concern they have regarding ecigs is it attracting a generation of vapers who would never have smoked. Yet he also said because there doesn't appear to much harm that may not be a problem providing these people do not move onto analogs at a later date. He phrased it to me that obesity is 10000x more of a concern to the NHS than ecigs and smoking analogs isn't far behind obesity.

Yup, the old "gateway drug" argument. It just doesn't hold water. Coffee doesn't lead to cigarettes. Nyquil doesn't lead to cigarettes. If the old pot gateway for heroine argument held, everybody would be dead.

Nicotine can help with obesity actually. It suppresses your appetite and steps up your metabolism. That's why people who quit cigarettes gain weight, unless they take up vaping of course.

I've been looking all over the internet searching for solid, rational responses to this question myself. So far I've found multiple studies across multiple continents indicating vaping has far fewer (almost negligible) negative effects on the user and have found no research indicating it is harmful enough to place restrictions on in public areas. The breakdown of concentrations of harmful chemicals I've seen are way below the threshold of concern. As safe as breathing clean mountain air? No. Safer than cigarettes? Absolutely. Safe enough to enjoy regularly and have an enjoyable and healthy existence? So far it seems more likely than not.

Yes the NHS (national health service) is a UK thing. These guys have to budget for something that 'may' strain the health service in X number of years/or budget research for something which be a future problem.

I think the worst reason against ecigs that id seen on a a site before i took it up was 'it could lead people to hard drugs'... People are so mis-informed and totally stupid sometimes.

Hi, I am new to this site. I just started vaping 2 weeks ago. I have been hearing that not enough studies have been done to determine the safety of e-cigs. Maybe I am naive, but can some one please tell me how much less safe can e'cigs possibly be than regular cigarettes?

Hey there Syl_Az,
So far CASSA has what is the best info. The some of the latest they have is here:

I always use this as a guide. How safe are cigs. Do we really know everything that is in them or just what we are being told. How safe is Apple juice. How safe is the air we breath. back in the 60's and 70's there were fewer cases of cancer, Why? I do know I have quit smoking due to Vaping. So safe or not I beat one demon.
