I got pulled over for a lane violation the other day....got a verbal warning which was a good thing as I was following the sign....anyway....I was talking with the cop and I had my purple spinner with a pink mini vivi metal tank on it right there so I asked him if he'd ever seen one. He said no, that he had seen the Blu's, but never a "rig" like mine. I asked him what he would do if he saw me driving down the street puffing on it. He said he'd probably pull me over because it looks just like a "device" used for two particular illegal substances. So I asked him what he recommended if that ever happened. He said to carry my receipts or some kind of paperwork I might have on the "device" in my car so I could show it while I explained that it was indeed just an electronic vaping system. I could tell he thought it was pretty cool and I got an answer to something I've been wondering about all along. I told him I hadn't smoked in 40 days and he congratulated me! win win situation!! :)

So after reading another thread here about someone having an altercation with LEO, I'm of the mind that if one's around I'm just going to go up to them and say, "have you seen one of these before?" That way I educate the LEO and avoid what could become a really ugly confrontation. Makes sense to me.

I think being sweetly and politely proactive when possible is the way to go, whether with LEO or bystanders. Being up front and excited and proud over how it is keeping you off cigs is a good icebreaker as well. There is a middle ground between acting furtive and ashamed and being all attitude "yeah I'm vaping, whatcha gonna do about it?" (Not at all implying anyone here has done that.) Most people, including LEO, have never even seen an APV. They have no idea. If people start copping an attitude at you after vaping is common and well known, that's another thing. But I think some of this is just that it's unknown, and the unknown is uncomfortable for some. What does it hurt to cut them some slack and give them a nice "introduction", even if they are stiff and wary? Maybe they won't be that way with the next vaper they see, thanks to you!

I vape in front of cops all the time and they will stare at me for a while but they never say anything. Now if i go to the suburbs i probably wouldn't do that because i doubt id get the same reaction...i think if you look like your not doing anything wrong they don't trigger the same as when they feel they're catching you doing something.

cops see me vape all the time around town. regardless if they think it looks like "something for illegal substance" or not...i've never once got pulled over for it. i think it's because i'm making ZERO attempts to hide it...as someone how is doing something illegal SURELY would.

i have gotten asked about it by a cop once at a bar though.

i explained it...
talked him into trying it...

last i heard, he vapes.

Yes, this was in the NJ suburbs and he'd never even heard of anything beyond the cig alikes you get at the drug store. My son, who lives in Brooklyn on the other hand, has seen all kinds of vaping equipment on the streets, so it definitely depends on where you are and also how you act. If you act like you're hiding something then yeah, they're gonna be suspicious. I just thought...wow, what an opportunity...and it worked out well.

You're right about it's being unknown. Until a couple of months ago I had no idea of anything beyond what you get at the local 7-11 for e-cigs. I will continue to be proactive if the opportunity presents itself. I figure we both did each other a favor that day.

So I asked him what he recommended if that ever happened. He said to carry my receipts or some kind of paperwork I might have on the "device" in my car so I could show it while I explained that it was indeed just an electronic vaping system.

Oh my, doesn't this sound all too similar with some o' da past century's world history overseas?!?!?

Yea, very good idea bringing it up FIRST. Very, very good tactic.

As far as carrying paperwork or whatever, it is sad that we should have to do this, but unfortunately things are the way they are. That is a good idea on his part, and I think I'll take that advice. I already have a card from LiteCigUsa (a vendor) in my wallet, that should at least help.

As far as carrying e-liquid in marked bottles like other officers have suggested to other people.....it ain't gonna happen for me. First of all, just because a bottle has a nicotine juice label on it, doesn't mean anything. Second, I don't carry e-liquid on me when I go out. Just an ego twist, an evod, and a pro tank. Thats all I ever need.
