Is it actual tracking, or just delivery confirmation? The USPS offers both, and simple confirmation is a lot cheaper, so that's what many suppliers use, even though they call it "tracking".

Honestly though, for what they charge, USPS is pretty good. You'll pay at least an extra $4-$5 for UPS/FedEx ground shipping, and possibly a lot more. I don't find that's a worthwhile investment just to know every time the truck driver stops for a pee break.

Agreed.
Not only that, but UPS/Fedex also tend to get really lazy in my area.
It'll be in my town at 1:00 AM, but then for some reason it takes them another day to sort it. USPS always gets it out if it gets there at a reasonable time.

I've honestly had very good experiences with USPS tracking. The tracking told me when the delivery arrived at point A, when the delivery was sent out and arrived to point B, and even when my package was on arrival to my location.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. I agree with other posters that USP and Fed Ex is more expensive.

You get what you pay for that's for sure.

I ship a ton of guitars (well more than that by weight) each year and tracking is a big deal when you're dealing with a thousand dollar peice of gear. I would say that it's worth it to many people to have tracking on a high end purchase. But I am not sure that I would pay, let's say 20% extra on a small order just to know exactly when it will show up. But hey, that's just me, I'm sure that everyone has their own ideas and know what works best for them.

As for overseas shipping with the USPS, forget about it!! They sent a Strat that was going to Sweden to Greece and a Les Paul that was going to Brazil to England and a Ibanez that was going to England to France. It took months to figure it out, this did not make for happy customers and I learned the hard way.

In the land of no hills and red dirt
USPS tracking is horribly inconsistent. I've had a lot of packages that did show stops seemingly in real time as it went from initial posting to my city's reception center and local post office. Other postings, (and this seems to be happening more lately) didn't show squat until well after it arrived in my mailbox.

It almost shows a snapshot of the usps, a big organization with an active union for its employees...some of them seem to bust their a$$es to provide great service, and others do the bare minimum or even less. I, and other people, have noticed a big difference in performance when our regular mailmen at home and work take a break, and replacements are used.

No complaints about the people working the counter at hefner station and bethany in oklahoma...those folks have always been above and beyond in my dealings with them.

Homeish now
Ya there tracking sticks and it's weird sometimes it's right on...other times it's worthless.

But from our suppliers POV ...there isnt are a better way to sent out many small packages all the time.
Most orders are only a few bottles, couple atty's kinda thing...they can print out and pay shipping on there computers at home. Which Means quicker shipping to us, as they dont spend a few hours at the post office or UPS every other day.

Personally I'd rather have the lousy tracking, that isn't really tracking to begin with, than pay extra to have the lazy UPS drivers who leave the package at the wrong house or don't even ring the doorbell, on the rare occasions they make it to the right house, before tossing the package on the step and leaving it there.

Y'all know that XKCD strip where he's refreshing the online tracking over and over again? I wanted to post that comic here, but the forums won't let me, because I haven't made fifteen posts yet.
