So I got a mvp2 about a week or 2 ago and was using the standard iclear30 that it comes with. The iclear30 already died out on me im pretty sure anyways because there was much less flavor and way less vapor. Understandable since i've been using it nonstop since I got it, anyways I plan on ordering a an Aspire Nautalis asap but just because i didn't want to fall back to cigs i headed over to my local head shop today to pick up something to get me by until then. They had a pretty bad selection only the option of 3 clearomizers so i picked up the cheapest which was a kanger mini protank 2. Started using it just a few minutes ago and i have some questions.
First off, i currently have 3 different liquids all of which i enjoyed on the iclear30, but they all taste terrible with the protank 2. Since i have a mvp2 ive tried changing the watts and volts and it seems the best taste i can get is at the lowest settings of 3.3v and 6w and that is still pretty bad. The higher I go with either variable the taste only becomes worse and worse. I'm a little confused is it my liquid? I mean all the flavors basically have no flavor and all taste like metal. Ive already vaped off it at least 100 times so it shouldn't it go away? The weird thing is the variables did not effect the the taste or vapor production on the iclear30 AT ALL
Also if anyone has the mini protank 2, i was wondering about the rubber piece on the coil right near the wick. Im not sure if this is supposed to be removed, the directions are extremely vague so im not certain.
oh and one last thing the directions says only to fill it will the dropper they supplied, but it did not come with a dropper lol... it was a sealed package and i have the code thing that comes with kanger stuff
any feedback appreciated

The coils should not be disassembled before installation. The little silicone "cap" over the wicks is what makes the seal and prevents juice from leaking out the drip tip.

As for the directions saying use their dropper, I chalk it up to a native English speaker not proofreading the manual. Kanger has a tendency for misspellings in their manuals, it happens.

Now, as for the important part of the issue.... that is really weird. Have you washed the tank? Sometimes they don't clean them very well and there is leftover machining oil that causes a weird taste. Completely disassembling and washing the tank in soap & water, vodka/ everclear, or vinegar usually works to remove odd flavors, stains, and residues (or use all of the above if it really won't come out).

Also, what ohm was your iClear and what ohm is the coil in the PT2? That can cause a huge difference in vapor and flavor production. The higher the ohm, the higher you want to set your volts/ watts. (Generally.)

I dont know what the ohms were in the iclear i dont have a multimeter it came with it though according to another post on the forum they range from 1.9 to 2.2. i also tried the second coil that came with the mini pro 2 it didnt change anything, i think it may just be low quality liquid or something as far as the taste. I did wash it as well did not help. Thanks for the info about the silicone piece

your mvp is a multimeter ;) - press both the P and U button at the same time. first number to show up is the coil resistance, second number is the remaining battery life before you need to recharge

also, try priming the coil by putting 1-2 dropps of liquid directly down the coil chimney. i find "kanger" style coil heads, all share the same QC issues and needed to be tinkered with to work correctly.

for example: a few offbrand heads, they used too much wick so it was dry burn central. fixed by removing the flavor wick.

yes i know but like i said it died and i cant check the ohms it would be inaccurate right?
what do you mean qc?

unless the coil is popped, it should still read correctly, it just may have went up in resistance due to gunk. i.e. - 2.2 coil originally, may read 2.4 after being used for soo long.

QC - quaility control. future forum advice, most abbreviated words, will show up underlined in dots. if you take your mouse and scroll over it, it will show what it is an abbreviation of ;)

the quality control for these bottom coil tanks i find are always wonky in one way or another. if you dont rebuild yet, you should look into rebuilding a protank coil head. as a rebuilt protank head will work 1000% better than any stock coil. i promise :)

My first experience with the Protank mini II and the evod glass was similar to yours- I too thought they do taste funky even with a rinse before using. Now I put them through 2 days of prep before I'll even vape one. Here's what I do now: Wash/rinse with dish liquid. Boil a few minutes in distilled water, let water cool, remove and let it dry out overnight. next day soak in vinegar mixed with distilled water awhile, let dry, followed by another rinse, boil and dry. And I replace the metal drip tip with a delrin one. The tank still tastes slightly funky after doing all this, but it goes away after a bit, once you get to your 3rd or 4th refill it is totally broken in. Once prepped and broken in they give a good and clean tasting vape and in general work best at a lowish voltage setting.

I'm thinking everything but the coils needs a good washing. Those are the same coils as in my evods and I've never had a flavor problem with them. If anything, I find juices don't taste as good on other companies coils. Are they genuine kanger coils? I wouldn't trust knock offs myself, who the .... knows what they'll perform like.

Another thought... you didn't sound impressed with the shop. Could they have packaged up a used one and passed it off as new? Or selling some cheap .... knock off? I hate that that is something to worry about, but I've caught big name companies that I won't mention here (not vape related) doing that with merch.

One of the companies starts with W and ends in T and rhymes with ball fart.

I agree with the low voltage recommendation ... at least for stock coils. I haven't tried a rebuild or removing a flavor wick, yet.

For both the Protank 2 mini and Protank 2 (same coils and most always 2.2) anything 3.8V and above can taste burnt, if I don't first draw a few times (cold ... without firing) to make sure the juice gets in there. But even with the cold draws before firing, it can sometimes be a bit hot tasting, so I usually keep it between 3.0V and 3.5V and everything is fine. My juice is almost always close to 80%VG 20%PG.
