I knew I'd end up getting a box mod at some point... and I KNEW it'd be variable voltage. So at last I've gotten my first "serious" mod. Mad Vapes VV Box Mod (Variable Voltage) Review - YouTube
In this review I also bring up a minor problem I have had with this mod. If I try to use any of my LED clearomizers the mod shuts down and won't work at all until I take the batteries out and let it sit for 10 min. Otherwise it's really an amazing mod for the price (less than $40) Anyone know anything about this problem?

Anyway, other than being proud of myself for finally discovering what vaping is *suposed* to be like, I just wanted to ask what was YOUR first real mod? What impact did it have on you and the way that you vape?

I've built several of these VV boxmods from the regulator board kit they sell. The regulator being used on this one has a 3A cutoff, which is what it sounds like you're running into. When I over-amp mine, turning it off and back on is all it needs to "try again".. That is, I don't have to let it sit for any length of time - certainly not 10 minutes. I don't think I've left 'em off power for much more than 10 seconds.

My first "real" mod was a Darwin. I've since been building box mods for myself and friends. I recently scored a REO Mini from the classies. I thought that going VV had spoiled me for 3.7v mods, but I guess not; I love my REO.. :)

My first mod was a Puck that I built thanks to ThePuck's excellent how-to. This mod runs off of 4 AAA NiMH batteries and runs at ~4.8V with the batteries fully charged. And since making my Puck(s) I'm not really satisfied with the 3.7/3.2V PVs. I've recently started modding with li-ion batteries but as my signature says 'Puck's got my back' :D

Good review and I'm glad your liking the MV VV box mod. Got one of those myself that I still use at times. As with what Tersur said, it's the protection circuit that is stopping you from using your LED clearomizers. Although, I've found that, even when I used AW IMR batts. It still didn't have an effect and the protection circuit was still in effect when I used my DCC.

My first real mod was my red & black REO grand. It basically gave me everything that I wanted when I came back to vaping. Since my biggest concern was performance and ease of use (wanted an easy transition from smoking to e-cigs). I didn't like to refill things constantly or having to top off. Nor did I like having short battery life. With a 6ml bottle and a battery that lasted me all day and then some. The REO answered all of my problems and required very little maintenance. Best of all, it performed like a beast. Couldn't ask for more and will not use anything else besides bottom feeders.

Overall, the REO Grand made it possible for me to permanently quit cigs for good. Which is the biggest reason of why I'm a fan and a strict believer/advocate of bottom feeders in general.

I bought one of these after I hit 2 months of vaping, was a pretty solid little device, but it felt fragile to me. Used it for a good month before I purchased Altsmoke's Alpha, and then stashed it in my hardware box. Took it out a couple months ago to try and couldn't get it to fire. I figured it was a worthy investment, but kinda sad that it didn't stand up to time.

When I first ordered the VVBox, the one I received was a bit broken. The hot glue under the negative battery post on the wiring side had pushed the post up so that the battery didn't fit. I did a bit of wiggling and it still wouldn't work. Opened a ticket with Madvapes and they replaced it after a few days of shipping and all of that.
