I have used poly, commerical cart filler, fluval, hemp tea bags, coffee filters, napkins, wool, ptb and direct dripping. I liked the wool until I used the PTB. The wool needed to be cleaned or discarded every two days for me. The PTB was a quick and easy rinse- the flavor was the best- it lasts for a few weeks-has no loose fibers and it is so easy to put in and out. I use a PTD with my 510-- But I direct drip with the 801 and clean my atty with tequilla :) I havent found anything that works great with the 801.

Please refer back this Thread to post #6, I use the thick felt. Also, if your fillers don't seem to be emptying, you may have too much filler. You have to have the proper density for it to both leach out and hold the juice.
I find felt needs to be replaced after a few washings, it become too dense, as it does shrink from use and washing, makes it too dense after a time. That would be standard proceedure for any filling, they just get fouled eventually. But the density is perfect as it comes.

I have not found where to purchase sheep small enough to fit in my 510 atty.

Sheep are made from REAL wool yes?

On a more serious note, while I have read a ton about fillers, I think aside from wicking properties of various materials, the affects or non affects on taste, and how long they last, ease of use, re-use etc really depends on the person you ask. I have used 1 cart with the stock filler for an entire week now and it is fine. (I have washed it!)

Having said that, If I were to replace mine I think I would try the blue fish tank stuff next as it sounded good from the posts on it in other threads here on the forum.

Ofcourse whatever works best is what anyone should use, I just have the impression that different things will be better for some and not so good for others.

The original thread for the blue fishy stuff I refered to is here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/cartridge-mods/27723-eheim-filterpad-mod.html

First thanks for all the great info and to melinda for posting her experience using this. :)

I guess they didn't like all the extra wool nib business.

Went to the site melinda posted and saw the quote below under the line item for wool nibs which is now 6$ for the first ounce and 1$ each ounce after. Maybe they saw the FDA claims and decided to save us from ourselves.
;)
*** Extra Wool Nibs are provided only to customers that order the Woolley "Down" pillow or have ordered this pillow in the past. For customers who do not have the pillow we charge an additional $20 handling fee.

The wooly down pillow is 85$ :D

I have yet to start vaping (should be here tomorrow) but in reading about filler materials, I think wool is the way to go, for me at least. First its antimicrobial which you don't get from other materials. It also has a very high tolerance to heat. In this application, as a cart filler, it also make a lot of sense functionally due to it effective wicking properties. Anecdotally, wool was used as a diaper cover before disposables because it would wick moisture from the surface, preventing leakage. Wool is very easy to clean, just agitate in cold water with a mild detergent and rinse well, lay it out to dry and it will regain its shape, as it is highly resistant to compression.

I like the nibs idea a lot. It seems like its probably the most convenient method given the size. Given the updated price on those, I decided to Orioin58's suggestion a try. In this stuff all the wool fibers are going in the same direction which will aid in wicking so I see that as a plus. I'm also going to see if I have any untreated wool yarn hanging around and try a couple ideas that could make it easier to wash and reuse the fillers.

Anyway, my 2¢.

Its clean ,no off taste, easy to replace,.. just cut , spread , roll and fill,, just get the natural color ,,. i had used it for 4+ days with no problems at all.

Actually, that is where I ordered from. I got it today and for those who want to know, it does look clean. YEAH.
Going to clean it myself though before using and then I need to pick up a small pet brush with metal bristles and I think I'm set.

The State of Confusion
I'm new to vaping, very new. I didn't care for the BE510 cart running out so quick. I had read this thread before getting my E-Cig.
I ordered 1 oz of 100% Wool Natural from wistyria.com. Cost a little over $5.00 with shipping.

So, just about 10 minutes ago I pulled some fibers and replaced the cart material in a blank cart. Cut it even with the top of the cart, trimmed the edges and started dropping. I can't believe I put 29 DROPS of eliquid in this cart!!

Talk about vapor and flavor!!! I'm changing all of my carts to wool and am also going to try the straw mod.

I switched a short time to the brass mess. It was good, but it released the liquid to quick and did a battery in and then I think the stiff brass damaged a couple attys.
So, and immediately, I went back to my wool.
Just for your information, when I first used wool it flooding the atty---I'm pretty sure it's my nature of packing it too loose. To solve this problem, I placed a small piece from a cotton sterile pad at the top.
It is great.

I'm just using scissors right now, and then stretching it out. So far it works pretty good but I thought the metal brissles would do better. TY for the info on the cat brushes.
How about a brush used to clean a grill? If I'm right, the brissles don't bend hardly at all on those babies.

heh That would probably do the trick but most likely cost a crap load buying 2 of them. I'll have to hunt around for a pair of cheap ones.

Add me to the list of vaping spinners :)

If you search eBay for spinning fiber or roving, you should find tons. Some people sell as little as 1 oz. I'll have to go through my boxes of spinning stuff. I know I have several types of wool, some alpaca, mohair, silk, hemp, rayon, qiviut - and that's just off the top of my head.

I did feel kind of stupid reading this thread - what are "nibs"?

I am guessing, as I haven't tried it yet, that a breed of sheep that has a fiber with a short staple length, similar to the legth of your cart would be the best. And what about felting little hunks of wool into something similar to a cigarette filter and just slipping it in the cart?

I have so many experiments to do when my PV gets here next week!

Be well,
~A

I got my Roving wool today from Orioin's ebay source today. Very nice stuff. Here is my method. I started to pull some fibers from the end which made a very thin mat about 6" long or so and an inch or two wide. Pulling helps keep the strands going the same way. I then rolled in my hand with a little friction to help the strands bind to each other, almost as you would do to splice two pieces of yarn. I did this until it turned into a cord the diameter of the cart, roughly. Then I folded a section in half and stuck it into the cart, folded end first, then cut the excess and filled it up as usual. Just make sure you remove any stray pieces of wool. They will stick to the bridge, not because of the heat but because it will tangle easily in the mesh on the bridge. Viola! By my estimate this 1oz package is enough to make well over 200 filler wads, all for the price of 5 new carts.

Nibs are little pellets of wool used to stuff a pillow.

There was a company that sold extra nibs for $1/ounce plus $5 shipping, so for $8 you could get 3 ounces of nibs -- pretty much a lifetime supply.

Unfortunately, they now make you buy the pillow (for $85) before they'll sell you extra nibs for it.

Thanks for sending me the free wool, Melinda. It works!

I have no off taste at all. I fill the cart about 3/4 full, then let the wool wick it up. No juice in my mouth or flooded atty.

But when I added the straw mod, I discovered something. Awesome, HEAVY vapor until the cart is empty. No setting it down to wait for it to wick. Just vape it.

Yes, I was one in the modder's forum praising the foam filler, but I think this is even better!

Try this cart mod with the wool. No need for the straw.
