It would be nice if the batteries were rectangular rather than cylindrical. I guess because of all the legacy devises that are made that they have to make cylindrical batteries. It would be nice if they could be rectangular. A rectangular 18650 battery would be 1.32 cubic inches. A cylindrical 18650 is 1.00 cubic inches. More volume, more power. An AW 18650 1600 would be a AW 18650 2112.

Is there any technical reason that rectangular batteries cant be made?

Yes, this morning I had too much time on my hands.

Laurin....that's you asking that??? Ha. When I read the title of this post, my first thoughts were that someone who didn't know anything about the REO OR about batteries was posting something really funny.....and I was preparing myself to jump in and try to "explain" why it's really okay the way it is......then I see the poster. Hilarious!

Yeah....I'll bite. I think it would be cool if the batteries were rectangular.....like those little batteries that used to fit in my old (really old) transister radio back in early 60s..........

Hi Jan, Your post might be a sign. My first transistor radio was an Arvin 8 transistor. I bought it with money earned from my paper route. That radio is long, long gone. So I did the research and found the model number and plugged that into ebay to let me know if someone should list one. Well over that past several years ebay would notify me that one was listed but they were never working ones. Well theres one on there now that works and looks good. I can buy it now for $52 or try to get it for $42. It was listed last week and although there were three watchers no one bid. They relisted it. It just seems like a silly purchase but I want it, certainly don't need it. I expect to turn it on to a Yankee game and Mickey Mantle will be at bat. Its a 1962 model. Only has an AM band. It takes AA round batteries....lol. Here is that baby in all its splendid glory:

Its my post so apologies to me for the hijack.

perhaps you just need to get out and take some more awesome photos :)

I should get out for a sunrise. I've been very lax about that. I used to do that a lot. I need a major kick in the ..... There will come a day where I won't be able to do that then I'll regret not taking advantage when I am able. Seize the day..make hay will the sun shines. Thanks for the reminder. :toast:

We all need a bit of nostalgia in our lives. It's like comfort food for the soul. :)

Even if you don't use it, it would make a fine piece to display on a table or in a cabinet. And of course all the better that it works!

boy does that bring back memories! my first transistor radio was a build it urself kit from radio shack. i was about 10y old and it was 1972. no wonder i ended up in the electronics field and fixing things, i totally forgot about that! i thought it was the greatest thing i ever did to get it working and be able to tune in to different stations with just an induction coil, and a variable cap and diode!

and by the way per above post i been using my first reo grand since this wednesday with a hornet at 1.4ohms. blown away at how good it performs coming from a nimbus at .7ohms. and the freedom i feel not having to carry a bottle and drip everywhere i go. its just stellar great little device all the way! people used to look at me funny when the watched me drip like i was a druggie or something.

I also built one like this. Along with a VOM (before DVOMs existed), an ocilloscope a BW and a Color TV and a Color Bar Generator. There used to be a company that you could order these kinds of kits from and the equipment you could build for next to nothing in money outlay was wonderful.

Yes. That was the name. I sold Grit newspapers door to door to afford it at first, but for the higher $ stuff, I was in the Armed Forces, so could afford a little bit of money for "entertainment". My first project was a crystal radio. (No Battery)

When they went out of business, Tandy bought them, and continued for a couple years.
