I wouldn't recommend the Smok Alien for a New mod

Couldn't resist - i have a Provari V2 that's five years old and still working and in good order (i probly use it for 10 mins a day) but, for me, the king of all mods for durability/price is the original MVP - after i stopped using it as a mod (due to the eGo threading) i carried on using it as a power bank and this thing is indestuctable. Still holds a charge after 3 years....China CAN make decent devices when they choose to. Unfortunately they choose not to in most cases.

Not so long ago a lot of mods seemed to have a lot more R&D prior to release. This was when there were only a handful of manufacturers. Now they seem to be released complete with bugs and poor finishing in the race to be the latest and greatest... Probably.

China does make some great electronics (my macbook pro is a perfect example of that). The problem is some manufactures just don't have good r&d and qc. My lost vape devices are built like tanks, so is the sx mini.

I was actually thinking the same thing for my next mod. Is the Lost Vape Triade either 200W or 250W a very good quality mod that should last a lot longer than the alien? I kind of like that Lost Vape device.

They're built very well, I use the therion 166 at work and I do construction for a living. Last job I was at was a glass furnace rebuild, my therion was covered in fiberglass and had to withstand 100f+ heat. Still works like new and other than some minor paint scratches still looks good.

OK, people. You can spend whatever you want for you collection. Justified.
But if you want just vape, you do not need to spend more than necessary.
Right now I have 4 mods in rotation, for $20, $22 (the oldest one, 2.5 years old), $25 and $34 (the most expensive mod I ever bought, 1.5 years old, and it's a newest one). All work perfectly. I did not ever had a mod failure in my 3.5 years of vaping. All of them - Chinese mods. Authentic, if you please. Chinese manufacturing quality is now pretty high, often higher then that of Europe or US, especially when machining is the main thing. Like for tanks. As I understand, low-volume manufacturing facilities of non-Chinese boutique modders do not have modern equipment and experienced working force, but Chinese cloners do have.
I do not need any warranties. When/if my mod fails I can just throw it away and buy another one. No calls, no meddling with postal service. Easy life. Yes, looks and fashionability of vaping equipment does not matter for me, I need only functionality. It looks silly for me to pay more than needed.

You tell 'em @Alien Traveler! Personally I'm a VALUE shopper. 2 of my fave mods (just happen to be SMOKs) were bought on clearance as a BOGO.... $10 for the first and 2nd one free. Have several other $10 mods all vape just like I need them to.
Currently rockin 3 Picos. Won 2 the 3rd one cost me $21.
I've finally locked in on the only tank I'll ever need. Trouble is they're out of production and hard to find. Found one for $27 dollars.... CRAZY! But on the same website I did buy an Evic VT 60w TC mod full kit that included my tank along with 4 5pks of rebuildable coils. So $20.93 (shipped) later I'm tracking a perfectly adequate mod for my stash, another of my precious tanks and a lifetime supply of coils. BUT BUT but none of it is shiney, just works, so I guess I mighta wasted all them big bucks.

No one said you have to spend alot on a mod, in fact if you look , most here do not spend alot. I would say 80 percent of the people here on ecf buy cheap stuff. So I would say that is not new news

I am one that buys as frugally as I can. New mod hits, "if", I'm interested in it or its features I wait, not only for the price to come down to reasonable, but also watch all the problems that arise if any. All of my mods I have I bought 6 to 12monts after release where most the bugs have been worked out. I've got mods from very expensive at the time, example a Provari 2.5mini, to a Somovar (anyone remember this competitor to the Provari??) that are both high quality, to my more expensive Therion 166, and vt75 which I bought after waiting on seeing the bugs with the DNA166 and DNA75, my most used mods and daily bang arounds are all cheaper, VTC Mini, Kbox Mini, still have 2 SVD 1.0's that still run after 3 or 4 years. I think the biggest problem is people just don't wait and research products as they used to, this flash, bling, bang crazed consumer market, example iPhones for instance, then take into consideration end users not taking very good care of their products, and/or using the devices to their max they are designed for and burning them out due to stress/super-frequent wear and tear.

I've had DNA40s just give up the ghost on me, just as many as I've had cheaper Chinese mods give out, miss my old MVP 2.0's as example had 3 of them burn out on me due to frequent abuse. Backups and rotation are key I believe, as stated earlier I've old IPV3's and Sig 30/50/100/150 watts that are still alive and kicking, and I've seen more failures in these recent Chinese 200+ watt devices than any others in the past 18months, and if I did go for a 200+ watt device it would probably be a Yihi or Evolv board, though those Smoant Battlestars look to live up to their name in TV history. Morale of the story, research your purchases ahead of time before jumping on the wagon, this isn't about one upping your neighbor or buddy Mister Jones or a game of he who dies with the most toys wins.

Still have the original, the 20W and MVP3 Pro, all still work fine, and all take any beating you could throw at them.

Pretty much the norm for most consumer electronics. Seems early adapters have now become the beta testers versus R&D.

Too bad we don't have the Provarinatti around anymore to also lecture us about our cheap junk devices. I miss those guys.
I love my dozen Provaris but my Alien has worked perfectly for almost 8 months and over 40000 puffs. It's my main mod.

I greatly prefer it to my Battlestar and G-Priv.

I must have got a good one as I am hard on mods.
