Thank you 7thCabal and FrogHat

Yes AW IMR fits from what the description says but it is unprotected, so if something go wrong it will vent, just not in flames. But it will create tremendus pressure inside the tube which does not have vent-holes. And tremendus pressure inside a not-vented tube means only one thing, explosion. So we are talking about a possible bomb if used with unprotected batteries of any chemistry.

Black AWs on the other hand are still "strong" and also have great protection (I would also happily use protected Trustfires but I think they are bigger than the AWs).

I really, really like Icon. I am thinking of getting both Icon and v3 when they are available at the same time with 510 connections. I just don't use unprotected batteries for no reason (safe chemistry unprotected batteries yes, but only in a vented mod).

The V3 is vented for sure. I cannot say with 100% certainty but I believe the ICON is as well. Also, here is quote from Steve at PS on 7-23-10:

"AW14500 WILL Fit. Last week, I made a small adjustment to the hex shaft to see if we could accommodate protected batteries. It wasn't much due to the fact that if it was TOO much, no batteries would work.

So, This is the Breakdown.
The ICON Ships with 3 flat washer, no lock washers. Use it how it is with 3 washers with Tenergy/Unprotected 14500 Button Top Batteries.

Now, to use Protected Batteries (at least the AW14500's I have here), you will need to REMOVE all (3) washers, and screw the electro nickel plated screw down to the plastic.

So, there ya have it. The jist ...
3 Washers = For Unprotected Batteries
0 Washers = AW14500 Batteries (can't comment on other protected 14500 batteries since we have none to test)"

Just want to say this because I was unaware of taking off or adding washers.

The batteries I have used so far are:

Tenergy 14500 (comes with the full kit I believe)

IMR AW 14500 600 mAH (Red)

I didn't remove or add anything, not sure if that helps anybody.

Works fine for me???

Absolutely! Both those batteries are about the same length. The protected AW14500 batts are a little longer and require more space, therefore removing washers. I like you battery choice, the AW 14500 IMR, especially if using LR atties. That would be my #1 choice as well.

Are there AW IMR 14500 batts with a higher mAH rating? If so, has anyone tried them with the ICON?

FrogHat: what difference have you observed between the performance of the ICON when using the AW IMR 14500 vs. the Tenergy 14500 batts?

One more thing: is the same charger ideal for (or even capable of supporting) both types of batteries?

The AW IMR seem to perform better with the L/R atties.
I am not a Guru when it comes to batteries, I asked a question and have been told these are the batteries to use, so I purchased them.

I use the same charger for both (the one Puresmoker provided), but another member turned me on to another charger that he swears buy, so once again I listened. I believe it's called a "PILA" and it's en route.

Thanks for your post, FrogHat. Once you receive it, Please share your experience with the PILA charger...
