Very robust but requires some electronics and a little time to develop the circuit.
Instead of the flexible diaphragm, a piezoelectric crysal is mounted on a solid divider wall. This will generate a tiny electrical pulse when the air pressure changes upon the user taking a draw. This tiny signal can be amplified, detected and operate a solid state switch.
The piezo elements are very cheap and can be found in disposable electronic lighters, where the reverse property is employed - the button press squashes the piezoelectric crystal generating a voltage. Ok the pressure in that case is comparatively large, but so is the voltage that results - enough to provide a spark. The circuitry can all go into the vaporiser's microprocessor.
