I wish I could have avoided the whole standard "stick" style batteries for the 510 all together.
My recommendation to a "never tried it" would be to get a couple of pass-throughs ( a spare for if one breaks ) , a dozen or so of the flat black atomisers, a couple 30ml bottles of 24mg juice (US made preferably).
While this stockpile is holding me over, I would immediatly start the accumulation of the components for a nicostick boxmod ( better than the lowest price batteries & a quality charger) and build the boxmod as soon as all the pieces are available.
My juice purchases then happen in bulk when the sales pricing occurs.
This is a recipe to save hundreds of dollars, quit analogues fairly rapidly, and eliminate the quantity of stray stuff that I have no further interest in using.
Standard e-cig batteries SUCK, and end up ruining atomizers due to the repeated install/uninstall of atomisers (they break internally due to mechanical stress).
Oh, one more thing, the flat/whistle tip cartridges for 901(s) are FAR superior to standard 510 cartridges.
AND... a quick taste test of a PG based fluid to determine if a SENSITIVITY to PG-only recipe fluids could have helped me to avoid the unpleasant effects of discovering this through stumbleing onto the possibility by reading this forum for a dozen hours or so.

To shorten it up dramaticly, to hell with junky standard batteries, use a box -or- similair mod, read/research extensively before purchasing anything
= (equals) save hundreds of dollars.

The things I'd do differently:

1) Buy more juice with starter kit. I ran out on day 3.

2) Buy and change out atomizers sooner. I spent a long time cleaning and reusing an $8 part. It got frustrating. You just can't beat new.

I hate to buck the trend, but I don't mind the 510 batteries. Marlboro / U.S.A. Mix is my favorite too.

I bought some sample fruit flavors but didn't like them. I don't regret doing it though you kinda gotta try them and see what you like.

Nice to see at least 1 person who started with the penstyle :D

I never got on so well with the 510 as every day use, it wasn't even out when I started but I would be happy with it as a first vape I guess. These days it doesn't hit nearly as good as a pen does with standard battery but enjoyed it muchly on the plane :) This time I am taking pens and a backup 510!

Just going on: "but if I had known then what I do now"

... there's much stuff that wasn't available, but if it were, I'd get a basic 510 kit, cybervex's bartleby/nicostick, Janty Stick and stock up on Decadent Vapours juice before he contracted with TW ;-) ... and maybe bypassed the DIY purchases and just stocked up on stuff I liked from DV, Nhaler, Janty/Joye.

In my case, money would always be a concern--I budget myself with my cigarette allowance $240.00 a month. Needless to say, I have enough to buy what I want sooner or later.

I would have skipped all those Health E cigarettes (a bunch of them, and the extra cartridges.) I have 14 of those 510s. Yep, a bunch. Nine of them are on line at any given time--the other five are still in the original wrapper for when these nine start going under.

Finally, I would have bought only the three flavors I like (plus one of those Johnson Creeks sample packs V2)...and been quit fine.

The first month I got a couple of Nipro. They didn't work very well. I was spending a fortune on cartridges that would no last as long as they say.

After reading to forum I decided to go with th 510 and this worked out great for me.

Then I started reading about a chuck. I deceided to get a Little Chuck becase it is not as big. I got the correct batteries, charged them and started vaping. None of my batteries lasted over 4 before having to be recharged. They will recharge withina couple of hours so there is not a real problem. The chuck is a real hog using eliquid. I don't understand .how you can get a longer battery time as this.

My battaries came from batteryjunction and i ordered the correct ones.

My first e-cig was a Penstyle. And it's still my favorite. I have no regrets about my initial model and would not have done anything different regarding initial model choice. I now own 7 different models, but it's Penstyle that is always in my hand.

What I WOULD do differently is not buy so much juice. I bought 15ml bottles of every flavor I ran across. SO silly. I should have bought smaller size bottles and fewer of them. I was so overstock on juice it was ridiculous.

Oh well, live and learn.
