I've owned two cell phones in my life. One, I bought in 2013 and used for about two weeks. Although, *used* isn't really right. I carried it with me on a long road trip and made a call or two. Several years later, my mother expressed an interest in having a cell and I thought I'd get the '13 unit activated for her. It was a solid, attractive build. That's when I found out it would cost as much to get it activated as it would cost to
buy a new one. Oh well, she didn't really need one any more than I did.
I bought my second one as a communications stop-gap after Hurricane Michael knocked out the area land-lines for a couple of months in 2018, and used it a couple of times. Cell towers were damaged too, but it kinda worked. I sold it for half what I paid.
My concept of a telephone is something that plugs into the wall. Although I do use a VoIP phone (THAT's nifty). I have an actual camcorder and an actual digital still camera. Each will do the job of the other, but not as well. My phones could take pictures and video in a pinch, but not as well as actual cameras. And PLEASE, cellphone videographers, if there's a chance you're going to want to share your masterpieces, turn the cell to landscape and record in 16:9!!!
When I'm alone in my car, the LAST thing I want is to receive a phone call, especially to get a lower rate credit card or
buy a maintenance contract for my car. I enjoy my alone time and don't want anyone bursting my bubble.
Once my employer sent me out of town and required me to carry a company cell. I reluctantly agreed, with the understanding that if they needed to call me they'd have to call twice. Once, so I'd know to stop the vehicle...and the second call several minutes later to speak with me.
Oh, and I wear a wristwatch too.
That's it. Confession over. Rant done. I'm the last remaining cell refusenik in the USA.
