Please, please, please take the time to write (snail mail as well as email) and call these folks to let them know how passionately you care about this matter. Even if you don't live in Illinois, you should know that some very well-respected and popular vendors are located in Illinois (Vapor4Life and Cignot are two that immediately come to mind, and I know there are others). If Illinois passes this legislation, it will effectively shut down the entire PV market for not only Illinois residents (because it will be illegal to sell to Illinois residents), but it will also affect those of us who rely on Illinois vendors for our supplies.

Several excellent letters are floating around for people to use as templates. For those who wish, here's an easy letter that's ready for you to fill in your name and address and mail out:

Dear Assemblymember:

I am writing to urge you to oppose SB3174, a bill that would make the sale of electronic cigarettes illegal in the state of Illinois.

Many long-term smokers have had great success switching from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes. Almost all of them have experienced benefits; for example, they breathe easier, no longer cough, and have improved senses of taste and smell. They appreciate that there is no secondhand smoke, flame, ash, or litter with e-cigarettes.

If this bill passes, Illinois residents will be unable to purchase e-cigarettes, and many will feel they have no choice but to return to smoking deadly cigarettes. Moreover, non-residents will not be able to purchase their e-cigarettes from Illinois companies they know and trust. This would be a great disservice both to consumers of e-cigarettes and to the businesses that provide them.

While I fully support prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, to take away this life-saving choice from adults is clearly wrong. The American Association of Public Health Physicians estimates the risk of electronic cigarettes to be less than 1% of the risk from smoking traditional cigarettes, so it makes no sense to ban the safer choice while leaving the deadliest product on the market.

Please consider both sides of this important issue carefully before casting your vote for something that will have such a profound impact on people's lives.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
[FULL NAME

PHONE NUMBER]

I also want to echo what others have said about the importance of being reasonable and civil. From what we can tell, most senators who voted on the matter really had very little information about e-cigarettes. To the extent we can provide information to members of the House of Representatives to let them know about how e-cigarettes as have helped so many of us reduce or eliminate our smoking habit, I think we have a real shot at defeating this.

However, if the sale of my supplies are stopped, I will either go back to smoking Marlboro's or simply have my supplies ordered & shipped to another state.

If the entire US banned them I would still buy them, smoke them, and probably sell them too (a sort of "drug dealer"). I am sick of the overgrown federal govt telling me what I can and can't put in my body, especially when it's a much safer alternative to smoking analogs and they refuse to have any actual govt funded research done to prove that e-cigs are harmful at all. I am not a ......n baby to be coddled and protected. I am a full grown man with a brain of my own.

On a side note, lab testing was done in New Zealand, and they concluded the ONLY health risk from smoking e-cigs was nicotine addiction. Other than that there are no other health hazards that they could find. I really think the US govt is afraid to fund testing because they will reach the same conclusion and the tobacco companies will suffer as well as the heavy taxes on cigs (because e-cigs are so much cheaper).

My Representative, Lisa Dugan, actually responded to my email. And I'm not talking about an automatic response. I should add that I also called her office but she responded to my email.

She specifically assured me that she will be voting against this bill as my (our) concerns mirror some of her own.

Well...we've got one!

JustJulie. What does the bill being assigned to the Human Services Committee mean? I only see 7 names in the list you provided. Does that mean that the future of this bill rests in the hands of those 7 reps? What role do those 7 reps play?

First, bravo, Nightowl, for making those calls and sending those emails. EVERY SINGLE CONTACT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. And it's very heartening that you received a personalized, positive response from your Representative Dugan.

Our understanding is that sometimes bills basically die in committee. That is our goal . . . for it to never make it out of committee for a vote in the House of Representatives. That is why we're suggesting an extra effort in trying to reach the members of the Human Services Committee.

However, that does NOT mean that folks shouldn't be contacting other members of the House of Representatives. What we're seeing is a lot of misinformation and ignorance. To the extent we are able to educate our legislators, I firmly believe that most of them will do the right thing.

this letter I wrote for a friend. Snail mailing them tonight myself to both offices of the members.

Dear Committee Members,
My name is %^&*&^%. I am an ex-smoker. My wife’s best friend, with much success, uses the electronic cigarette. I’d heard about this device some time ago and thought “What a cool concept, how does it work? What does it do?” What can I say I’m a research junkie. I got on the net and looked it up.
I have to say I read the FDA’s report and came out of it confused. I kept looking around and came across some forum’s, which then led me to more information. There are lots of tests and research done on the electronic cigarette, also called a PV, personal vaporizer. The Electronic Cigarette Association, ECA, has sited lots of research on their site. Also, The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association, CASAA, is a wonderful information hot spot and after a few hours I feel like I have done more research than the FDA.
I do not us a PV, however, my friend does and so do many, many, many other people. None of whom market to minors or non-smokers. The population are people who couldn’t quit combustible cigarettes, responsible adults who are having success with an alternative. I don’t see any reason to frown upon this at all.
I will end this letter with a few quotations.
“We have every reason to believe the hazard posed by electronic cigarettes would be much lower than 1% of that posed by (tobacco) cigarettes. The testing guidelines in the current tobacco act (circulating through Congress) would represent a ban on electronic cigarettes, (yet) if we get all tobacco smokers to switch from regular cigarettes (to electronic cigarettes), we would eventually reduce the US death toll from more than 400,000 a year to less than 4,000, maybe as low as 400.”
· Joel Niztkin, MD, MPH, DPA, FACPM, Chair, Tobacco Control Task Force, American
Association of Public Health Physicians
“The vast majority of the harm caused by smoking is from the method of nicotine delivery rather than from the nicotine itself. There would be a parallel problem if people got caffeine from smoking tea leaves rather than making an infusion of these leaves in hot water. It is clear to far-sighted researchers that there are huge gains to be made from dealing with the delivery system.”
· David Sweanor, BA, JD, Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa
Thank you for your time and attention and I hope you are able to research this subject for yourself before coming face to face with this bill. SB3174

This is CRAZY, first health care is jammed through not to mention amnesty, tax and trade, taking over the Auto industry, taking over the Banking industry, and on, and on, and on, and now THIS!!!! I quit analogs after I found ElizabethsElectronicz.com after going through a bunch of others they have a 510 model that comes with a Pcc just like Blu's Pcc, has atomizers that don't have that horrible flavor right out of the package and has awesome throat hits, unfortunately they are out of Illinois so I knew it was only a matter of time before they got screwed and by association I got screwed by the ever imposing Government.

I know State Representative John Cavaletto. He is a member at a country club I work at. I have used my PV in front of him more than once, as well as state cops/detectives and city officers/detectives. None of them seems to have a problem with it after a short expanation of what it is and how it works. I will talk to John A.S.A.P. and have already got some one that works in his office (that I am friends with)looking in to it for me.

That's great! I think people sometimes don't realize just how important those personal connections are. Now is the time to use what we've got. :)

I am not an IL. resident and haven't heard of a proposed bill for WI, but what about a "pre-emptive strike". I'm not sure this would be a good idea and would like some opinions on this. Would it be a good idea to start sending letters to other state officials concerning this issue before a bill comes to be. Maybe sending testimonials, results, and the right information to show how these devices have eliminated our need for harmful tobacco.
I wrote Governor Doyle and first got an auto-email suggesting I call or write. However, my email must have been read by someone, because two days later I got a personal letter back from him:

Dear Ms. Noll-Marsh,

Thank you for letting me know about your opposition to legislation that would ban electronic cigarettes. It is good to hear from you, and I always welcome your comments on any issue of concern to you.

I have also heard from others in Wisconsin who agree with you about this, and I will keep your views in mind if the Legislature approves a bill and sends it to my desk for consideration.

I also encourage you to let your state representatives know about your views on this issue. Their contact information can be found on the "Who are My Legislators?" page at http://waml.legios.state.wi.us. or by calling the egislative Hotline at 1-800-362-9472. Their email addresses can be found at http://legis.state.wi.us/leginfo/inetmail.html.

Please feel free to contact me again at any time I can be of help to you. Best wishes to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Jim Doyle
Governor

It's was obviously part form letter, but it shows that someone heard me, so the same can happen for others in Illinois, New York and California!

And it doesn't hurt to draw attention now - better to be proactive for your state than reactive. Imagine if all of your representatives had already read something like the "7 Biggest Electronic Cigarette Myths" article and received numerous letters from vaping constituents BEFORE a bill is proposed - they wouldn't be as easily hoodwinked by this type of proposal!

They are the people who vote whether or not the bill gets to the House floor to be voted on by the general assembly.

So, we need to contact those committee members and be sure they understand that we support banning sales to minors, but not language that effectively bans them for sale to smoking adults.

So, even if they aren't "your" representative in your district, they are representing you in deciding whether or not to let this get through to a vote. So, it's important to call them or snail mail them!

It just pisses them off that we are buying something they don't control or tax the hell out of. They also get bribes from big pharma and tobacco industries and the doctors want to get in on the game too.

If there is another election we need to get serious and vote out all incumbents and if possible elect no demo-rats or republi-scum. They are all treasonous .......s who need to be removed like a cancerous tumor. Corruption has allowed our government to be hijacked by a criminal international banking cartel who are bankrupting the entire world. Learn the truth at infowars com  before it is too late.

Buy nicotine at: alibaba com/trade/search?SearchText=pure+nicotine&Country=&CatId=0&IndexArea=product_en&sq=y (I can't post links yet so put a period before the com on the links.)
The other ingredients for e-juice will be easily available after any ban. I don't know how much e-juice a liter of nicotine will make but it could be a lifetime supply. If they do ban e-cigs and you have a few liters of pure nicotine laying around, you will become a very popular person. We can make our own e-cigarettes and e-juice, to hell with these anus-holes you have elected to represent you. I didn't vote for them because I don't vote for criminals like most people do. I voted for Ron Paul but most Americans were brainwashed by the media and didn't know anything about him. This is not a good idea. Just bringing any bill to the floor opens up taxes, restrictions by prescription only, manufacturing by pharmaceutical companies, etc.

The best thing is for them to leave it alone and let it die, otherwise bringing a bill to restrict sale to minors will leave it open to evil things, look out because they love to tax and take away your rights. They also love bribes from lobbyists to insert their own profiteering legislation.

Also they will justify a huge tax to make it too expensive for minors..
They are always looking for another tax. Then you guys keep electing them.

WE aren't proposing it.

The bill already proposes making them illegal for minors - that is how they are trying to "sell" it - and they are sneaking in the part about making them illegal to adults, as well.

We are saying "We're fine with making them illegal to sell to minors, but keep them legal for adults."

Sitting and doing nothing is the WORST thing we could do - it's not just going to go away by itself!!

You might want to do some reading up on what is going on across the country - in individual states, with the FDA and in federal court - before giving such uninformed advice.
