I have only ever direct inhaled. When I started smoking the e-cigs, my guy informed me that I wasn't doing it right, that you smoke these differently from cigarettes, and that I should fill my mouth up with smoke first and then inhale. I tried it that way, and occasionally I will do it just for a little variety, but comes naturally to me to do the direct inhale method, whereas I have to think about holding it in my mouth first.

my theory was that direct inhalers (suck straight into the lungs) are mostly younger generation Americans..

based on the simple logic that i live in the UK and in fifty years of smoking have not come across anyone who uses the direct inhale method..

i dont walk around with my eyes shut or my ears closed.. but it is just a theory..

trog

i find most of the older men in America direct inhale to the lungs. This is why they seem to smoke much faster, especially in the hollywood industry.

You don;t have as much time to smoke as you used to.

I've always used the mouth inhale method. Direct inhaling always gave me a sore throat. But I know some smokers who direct inhale. One guy I went to high school with could pound down an entire analog in under 30 seconds.

One inhale I like to do is what I call the "French Inhale". You bring the smoke into your mouth, then reverse your tongue and push the smoke out while inhaling through your nose. It used to just be a neat trick, but now that I vape, I do it all the time, just to get a great wiff of my vapor.

It's funny that you said that about French inhaling. I didn't learn how to do it until after I quit smoking regular cigarettes and started vaping.

I can't say I fully agree with you on life, Trog. I believe a small fragment of us is who we are. But not us in our entirety. We are made into who we are, how we act, how we live, how we speak, our grammar, our kindness, our hatred, our love, our reactions, even down to the way walk are all inherited through our bloodlines and our own life experience. That is influenced by our Grandparents, parents, siblings, Friends and most of all our surroundings. I believe that small fragment inside of us that make us unique is our true selves.
Just like there is no way to justify smoking correctly. Smoking is one of the 1st substances consumed by the human race, all through out history. Take the native americans for example, they used salvia for spiritual purposes, and for which to be performed correctly and for the right reaction a direct inhale (burying the smoke deep within the lungs ) was the appropriate way to let their system absorb everything.

Cage, I smoke the same way, when I have the pass through hooked up ;)

I think I figuered it out! Probally no one is reading this, but yea well, Im interested...
Did anyone ever notice that tracheotomies were pretty almost common years ago? Lol I know this is going to sound crazy and a bit far fetched but Leaford was talking about the way he learned to smoke, by watching rolemodels/legends like Humphrey Bogard, Roy Orbinson etc. Ok, going by the ages of all the old folks we seen with tracheotomies way back when, they had to be byween the ages of 70-90 being born from 1910's to 1930's, most of role-models Leaford was talking about was around this generation. Therefore maybe it was the older Americans that directly inhaled right through to the lungs, causing those serious problems.

Think of mouth inhaling as having the smoke in your mouth, then with a quick inhale, through the throat (quickly) in the lungs, then out. Compared to Direct, making a constant long drag of smoke, slowly through the throat, filling the lungs, then exhaling. Logically that method may be more strenuous on the throat and lungs, causing more problems. Just an idea that I just Needed to state :)

I wonder if it has to do with whether you first smoked tobacco or some other product.

When I smoked analogs I direct inhaled of course I didn't start smoking tobacco either ;-) if I understand what people are describing as direct inhale correctly meaning I draw deep into my lungs from the cigarette then I'll chase it down with some clean air by removing the cigarette from my mouth and continuing to inhale.

What I've found with the E-cig is that I tend to draw into my mouth first then pull it back into my lungs most of the time when just kind of relaxing. If I'm understanding mouth inhale correctly rather than puffing like a cigar or pipe smoker does.

I do occassionally do the draw into mouth inhale then exhale out of nose while drawing into mouth thing when I'm on a short break (wife doesn't let me vape in house).

I'm not sure I've known anyone who "mouth inhales" cigarettes. Most smokers I know draw big full cherry cracking drags straight to the lungs for the most part particularly when feining hard for a fix.

Now there may be something to Trogg's generalization in this matter, but its hardly a theory it's just a opinion a theory has to be testable and falsifiable and something that says mostly or mainly isn't a theory because it is a subjective opinion. Do you define mostly as 50.9% or 66% or 90%.

On all the political racists nonsense he's babbled well he strikes me as no different from the poorly educated rednecks we have over on this side of the pond who just never emotionally matured past adolesence. Seems to be a conservative trait.

During the time I've read this thread I've taught myself to direct inhale. I never even thought about it before. Now I really know what the throat hit is all about. I think I'll stick to mouth inhaling as the throat hit is a bit too harsh for me with direct inhaling. I'll keep playing around with it though - who knows, maybe it'll grow on me. I'm sure the e-liquid suppliers would like us to direct inhale - seems like it would use up the liquid faster.

I haven't had a chance to read the whole thread but I've always mouth inhaled. I actually got made fun of once in high school for doing it this way because I was told that I wasn't inhaling the smoke. I'm a still a young American and I still mouth inhale, although with cannabis I direct inhale.

EDIT: Trog, chasing the dragon refers to using ...... or ....... (but more often ......) because those drugs your are chasing a high that you can't reach. Cannabis is nothing like that. I've never seen or heard of anyone who kept smoking all night because they couldn't reach the high they wanted. That's just ridiculous.

EDIT2: I want to join Kate's gang, any gang led by a nun is pure awesomeness. My last name is old English for Christ, that's gotta count for something.

I am 29 american that started at age 20 and I direct inhale. I tried mouth inhale but my mouth must not be very big because I could never get enough smoke!

I think you will find menthol smokers tend to direct inhale and regular tends to mouth inhale.
I don't think that is true - I WAS a menthol smoker and have never direct inhaled.
