this started with me trying to make a VV PSU off the 12v from my PC. the rheostat did not get the voltage low enough to be usable at 12v. so i used an old memorex controller as a battery pack for 2 10440s. while testing it i relized it would be sufficient in this configuration and all would fit in the controller.

items used:
1 nyko intercooler ts for fat ps3 (also salvaged 4 40mm 12v fans)
1 memorex dvd controller

the silver wheel is for the rheostat

i need to source a momentary switch, some smaller gauge wire and a 510 connector. looking what i can hack apart to finish :p i have an old DVD player thats looking good for a switch and wire
this is a VV HV mod. testing in that config is about 5.2-7.6v, im hoping with smaller gauge wire and an atty to get it down a little more in the end, 5v up would be nice

ps: why is it all things ive hacked apart have the battery terminals ON the PCB???

sourced wire and a button from a daewoo dvd player from like 01. actually got 12 of them buttons, a bunch of female rca connections and another pot... and tons of wire. not sure what else ill salvage but yeah, tiny momentary switches, will probably burn out but is the perfect match for the rubber nub from the buttons on the remote...

searched big lots and dollar store for a hot glue gun. neither had one. ill splurge and get one from target or wally-world tomorrow (have i mentioned i hate being laid off)

then tear apart an old 510 battery for a connector

Hot glue is pretty worthless for modding, but if you feel the need to just tack something a glue stick and a lighter work fine.

You realize that neither the buttons nor the trimmer/pot you salvaged can handle any real current.

fire button location, going to cover the rest with some sort of film or vinyl

the pot/rheostat (not sure the difference)

need connector and some hot glue to hold the button and pot in place... and maybe a master switch. need to stay out of the kids toy boxes :p

yeah i know. see how long it lasts. trying to keep my hands busy and all... i have a lot of old electronics, maybe when they go ill salvage some more parts and so on, by then maybe i work will pick back up and i can buy the real components i need

and i really just need to hold the switch and pot in place, this wont get heavy use im sure

Why don't you just pull off the 5V rail?

Then use one of these with a simple on/off switch,

3-Amp Barrel Diodes - RadioShack.com

Basically when OFF the current runs through the diode (dropping your voltage), when ON you'll get full current (path of least resistance).

Not exactly VV but you'll have either ~4.3 or 5V. More useful than a single volt device.

Actual reostats that can handle high current are quite expensive.

so still tinkering around with this. i wanted to salvage more from the electronics i ripped apart, and get practice soldering smaller components. i got a .8 ohm resistor from the DVD player. and im still getting 7.6v to the connector. it feels a little bit cooler but the multimeter is saying differant.

ps: the lil momentary switch is still kicking. it may not be rated, but its small, has a very nice clickie, and its small... so ill use it again, maybe with a mosfet when it comes to it, im sure i can salvage one out of something

something for people to think about...

had an old 12v cordless drill with no batteries... variable speed... took it apart, salvaged the trigger and electronics, wired it to the 2 10440s... and pressure sensitive VV. i got too curious and took it apart to see how it worked and if i could make is smaller. it dont work no more  but it was too big and required too much pressure to pull for an ecig mod.
